Ok well I go to a really conservative Church of Christ private school and today our teacher was saying that 70% of the internet was pornography. I said," Uh, no that's just something narrowminded people want you to think." Somebody else also said "Uh there's anal sex in our book!" We're reading Turn of the Screw. Anyways is there any truth to that fact?? I hardly believe it. BTW nobody in my household is a jesusfreak.

I read a similar stat from a reputable source that said 70% of money making sites on the internet are related to porno sites. I beleive it. It sounds like your quote is a spin off or misquote of the above.

I don't know, but ~1/3 of the movie industry is porn.

1/2 of my body is pornographic.

I let you decide which half.

That would be very difficult to measure.

And what's the unit here? Did he think 70% of the sites (domains) on the whole Internet? Or 70% of the total of Gbytes? Or 70% of the content reaching his home PC?

I can tell you - counting the no. of different sites or the number of bytes going over my screen, it's closer to 0%.

The number I read in, I think it was Variety, which was similar (60% IIRC) was regarding "commerce" done through the internet. That would be pay sites, and porn-related shopping (videos, toys, etc.). Not necessarily # of sites or # of hits, but commerce (which is measurable by the amount of internet sales reported).

The 70% figure sounds more like a commerce figure than content. No wonder legislators are eager to get a piece of the, um, pie.

I work for an internet filtering company, n2h2.com, where my one of my jobs is categorizing websites. Near 50% of what I see is porn, but of course we're looking for it. So I have no idea what the actual percentage is. Let me just say this; There is a ton of porn on the net!! We've had upwards of 30 people blocking porn for 12 hours a day for more than 3 years, and we aren't anywhere near finding it all. I'm guessing that hundreds of new sites pop-up every single day.

70% of the commerce on the Internet is porn? Come on...with our help, we can get that to 80%.

New mission statement - buy more porn, don't let Amazon win!

There is no real way to measure how much of anything there is on the internet, because there is no single place to count it all. There are at least a dozen domain registrars for registering .com, .net and .org domains, not to mention all of the country codes. And of course you can serve web pages without a domain. So that rules out both site count.

There is also no way to measure how much of a certain amount of traffic is of a specific content type (unless you want to measure amount of traffic on a specific port, like web traffic, but you can't tell what that web traffic consists of). So that rules out traffic count.

And finally, there is no way to measure how much is spent in a single category of transaction per day. If anything, you -might- be able to get all of the credit card processing companies to say how much of their transactions were done over the web in a particular timeframe, provided you could get a list of all of them, but that wouldn't give you per category. So again, there is no way to measure how much money is spent on the inernet.

The decentralization of the internet is what makes it so great.

Whoah... I dont know about that! 70% is kinda skimpy don't you think? I was thinking more like 95%. That seems to be a bit more accurate.

All the internet is, is a pipeline to porn. And your internet service provide just determines how fast you can pump porn to your monitor.

I don't know about 70% but it sure seems as if whenever I do a search at least one out of the ten listings is for a porn site. And if, by chance, you happen to put in an address that you might think would be for something different (ie whitehouse.com) you come up with a porn site and about a million other sites come up at the same time. You try shutting the damn windows down but more keep popping up.

Well, people weren't working 12 hours a day. We had 3 shifts of 4 hours each. We had about 30 people working each shift. That was until the internet bubble burst and everybody got laid off. Now there's 10 of us working regular 40 hour weeks. While an AI program finds most of the porn, we fix mistakes, clean up the database, look at customer requests, and still manage to see more porn than is advisable. In a normal office you'd be shocked to see somebody looking at porn, here if they don't have it on their screen they're doing something wrong. You wouldn't believe the sense of humor we've all developed around here. The things we say on a daily basis would probably get you sued for sexual harrasment.

    It's impossible to measure.
However, anyone with a hotmail account can testify that 80% of the SPAM they get is porn! [IMG]
I would believe that 80% of the money making ventures on the internet are porn.
