Interlaced/progressive problem (1 Viewer)

I have a Toshiba SD4800 dvd player hooked a a fairly entry level RCA Hdtv-projection. It runs 480p and 1080i and when I have the DVD Player running in progressive, movies like Toy Story and any CGI movie have ugly visible scan lines. Switching to interlaced makes it better but everything gets stretched and loses detail. It looks great in progressive for normal films but anything animated doesn't work. Any ideas?
By the way, the Xbox 360 looks perfect on HD setting with the RCA

I take it these are more like part of the picture and not some sort of interference lines?

Can you set the Xbox 360 to 480p output just for testing purposes over the same connection? Some displays just don't like 480p input, not that I think that is the case here at this time.
