My Toshiba notebook had 128 MB of RAM and I decided to upgrade it to 256 MB. After I installed it and checked my System properties, it says I have 248 MB of RAM. What happened?

Your laptop may be sharing the system ram with the video card. Check the total ram in the Bios and see if the correct total is being displayed there.

oh... and there's always the thought that you may have bought a stick of ram rated in the decimal system and not the binary system.

That is, your stick of ram has 256,000 (256*10^3)bytes instead of 262,144 (256*2^10)bytes.

Probably your video card in the lappy shares the ram with the system memory, and the video card uses 8 megs of ram (256 - 248).
