Jar Jar says... what would you do with these?

Mesa gots sixteen 18" woofers in storage......
Earthquake car audio (EQ18CAST), 3" inch VC.. accordian
    surround.....

Been in storage for 10 years and they are in good shape.
4 ohms each, was for car audio back then.. Looks like a
standard Eminence 18" driver, rumor has it they made this
    for Earthquake.

I can find T/S parameters, but I found
a place on the internet that had these specs.
    Earthquake
    EQ18CAST
    VAS 388 l
    FS 26.1
    QTS .40

    Choices are;

    1. Don't use them.
    2. Sell them to peeps.
    3. Make 3 line array cabinets, for a wall of sound?
Five woofers per cabinet (90" tall), 3 cabinets side by side
against the wall = 15 woofers.

Small house, no basement, ziltch - lol

    Cast yer votes. lol

Seems like a no-brainer to me. [IMG]
None of the above. Use all sixteen in a 4x4 layout on an open baffle placed near a wall or corner and EQ to suit. Or I suppose you could mount them in the ceiling, but that's too much work IMO since even assuming a modest 7mm Xmax and 100W/ea. should yield some structural damage from the dipole. [IMG]

I was thinking cluster instead of line array as well.

Maybe it could be an IB since a corner has 3 planes, mount 5 on each plane and the last one directly in the corner.

If it's a small apartment complex ask your neighbor if they mind having the rear end of a few drivers sticking out into their room. Tell them it's the back of the speaker so they won't hear anything.

You could have some serious SPL & bass with that many drivers!!! This should be a fun project if you decide to use them.
If you do get rid of a few, what would you sell them for? LMK.

I think Gregs idea is the best. I nice big ol' cluster in the corner, EQ'd to the max. Even if they dont have the ultra high xmax that we are all accustomed to here, they would still kick major ass. Go for it!

Chris - ROFL! [IMG] And I would totally try asking that too.

I agree with Greg that a dipole would be the killer ap.

However, I'd suggest stereo dipole line arrays of 5/6 per channel (depending on your ceiling height) EQd flat to just below the frequency whose wavelength is twice the longest dimension of your room--(maybe 30-35Hz). Put the remaining 4/6 drivers into 2/3 small boxes, transform ala Linkwitz, and cross them over steep under the dipoles.

The dipole line arrays would give you minimum room mode amplitude and the LT boxes would pour a deep, solid foundation down below where room modes can't form.

Alternately, put all the drivers into two force-canceling dipole channels--picture 4 stacked Phoenix derivatives per channel.

    I salivate at the possibilities!

You're in luck! [IMG] I still have the spec sheet from my old Earthquake EQ1265's. Earthquake used the same spec sheet for all products, so here are the T/S parameters for the EQ-18CC. (CC = cast basket, cloth accordian surround)
    Fs 26.1 Hz
    Qts 0.40
    Vas 13.7 ft^3
    Xmax 0.3"
    Pe 300 rms
    Sens 96.3 dB @ 1w/1m
    Z 4 ohm
The spec sheet also has all of the recommended enclosures for car apps, but I doubt this would be very useful.
    Enjoy! [IMG]
