Hi all, I'm looking to stay in Vegas for 2 nights in mid february (Tue thru Thu) with a friend of mine. I don't need a fancy hotel, but I don't want a dump either. I want it to be fairly close to the bigger hotels like Bellagio and Paris (where I've stayed before, but I don't want to pay that much if I can avoid it). It has to have 2 queen beds, otherwise I don't really care too much about room amenities.

    Any suggestions?

I was thinking of maybe Barbary Coast or the Boardwalk, anyone have experience with those?

Which website to book through? I've used Expedia before, would they be good for this too?

Am I better off waiting and seeing if the bigger hotels (any hotel, not just the ones I've mentioned) have any deals for this time period? Right now they don't seem to have any deals that go beyond January.

    /Mike

There's a lot of variables (conventions are the biggest) but mid-week you can find some darn good rates at some of the nicer Strip properties. Mid-week I've stayed at Treasure Island for $69 and Paris for $89.

Imperial Palace is a good location and an ok hotel. The whole place smells like mildew and smoke but the prices and location can't be beat. Have stayed there once and got two queen beds. Was also surprised to get a strong WiFi signal in my room even though they're not set up. Wonder whose signal I was getting?

No experience with the other places.

Just keep checking back every few days with major travel websites and the casino's sites. I've always gotten the best rates from the casino's websites.

Stardust was old but fine when I went. Who goes to Vegas for the hotel rooms, thats what I want to know =) At MOST you should be spending 6 of every 24 hours there, often less =)

We stayed at the Tropicana a few years back (2000?). Seems like the room was only around $40-45.

It's down by New York, New York, MGM, Excalibur - perhaps not as close to where you want to be, but quite reasonable when we were there.

I stayed at 'The New Frontier' during the summer. Rooms were reasonably priced and clean. I'd rate the place as OK, nothing great. Right across the street from the new Wynn property and the fashion mall.

I was there on a convention, and my co-workers father stayed at the Boardwalk, and seemed to think it was fine.

I stayed at the MGM Grand, and honestly, have been in nicer hotel rooms at Holiday Inns!

I havent' been to Vegas in 5 years, but its funny to see that the smell problem at Imperial Palace still continues. lol

I would recommend, Startdust, Frontier, Circus Circus, Stratosphere for cheap rates, but mentioned before some of the nice hotels do have great rates for weekday stays. If you really want to go the cheap way, Westward Ho.

Don't worry, I'm not planning on being in the room that much. [IMG] But when I am in the room I want to feel relaxed and not be bothered by some weird smell, bugs or a noisy construction site outside. I also want the service of the hotel to be reliable (check-in, handling of problems, reservation reliability and so on).

Thanks for the answers, keep the suggestions coming! [IMG]

Anyone have suggestions about good sites to book through?

    /Mike

Ahhh, the Westward Ho. They don't call it the "Ho'" for nothing.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

On the other hand, if you don't mind kids being around, and you're in the main Tower, Circus Circus is pretty conveniently located and rooms are normally cheap.

With the right planning, you can stay at Ceaser's pretty cheap; and Treasure Island also has pretty good rate breaks via the internet.

Just go in and start playing $50-100/hand at Blackjack and in a few hours they'll probably comp you a nice suite [IMG]

    Here's a funny true story:

I'm taking the shuttle bus from the airport that stops along the strip at different casino/hotels. I'm relating a story to these 2 girls I'm with. It's kind of a cramped minibus - everyone can hear what I'm saying.

I'm telling them about a cheapskate co-worker of mine who got married in Vegas and stayed at the Imperial Palace!

Right after that, the driver says "Imperial Palace, next stop!"

About half the people get off the bus. I turn red with embarrassment.

I'm sure I ended a few relationships in telling that story on the bus.

    Jason, [IMG].

I'm gonna keep looking. More suggestions are still welcome. [IMG]

AjayM, with the inflation, how long do you have to play at that level to get a comp room? [IMG]

The Flamingo. I stayed there this Spring. They had recently renovated half the building, and the room I had was in great shape. It was also on the side overlooking their garden, so it was a good view. And it's in the midst of the strip, conveniently located to all the other major hotels.

We stayed at the Luxor a few years ago and it was pretty good. Very nice rooms, and under a hundred a night. It's at one end of the strip, but not hard to get to the rest.

If you want to be rated, you should be able to get a comped room (or heavily discounted) at a place like The Mirage for about 4 hours a day of $25 per hand. Places like Bellagio or Manadaly Bay will require much higher average bets though. And, of course, anything around March (NCAA tournament) is tough.

Has anyone stayed at Harrah's? How is that? It's $108/night during the days I'll be there, compared to $80 for Imperial Palace, Barbary Coast and >$140 for the big casinos. Is that a decent deal? Seems like it's a fairly well-regarded hotel on the sites I've looked.

I almost always stay at Harrah's. Nothing spectacular, but it's a great location and no major flaws. I like to hold out for the $49 rooms on their website, though.

I understand they have poker once again. I may never leave the building next trip:b I also was pleased to take $1800 from one of their Let it Ride tables last spring.
