The last time I went to the FYE store at the mall, some earnest-looking guy asked the clerk, "Do you have Indiana Jones on DVD? Where's Star Wars?"

    Penetrating questions to be sure.

Well, it has been transfered to A DVD, but not in MPEG-2 DVD standard... it was one of ten movies some company fit onto a DVD to show off they're new encoding scheme.

About 2 years ago, they actually were planning on releasing a new laserdisc box set, new transfer and 5.1 sound.

Well, they canned that at the last minute.

Paramount is ready to release them on DVD but Lucas will not allow it. Lucas is a real pain in the ass if you ask me.

On another note, Raiders and Temple were broadcast on ABC this past week and were in HD, 1080i. They looked and sounded INCREDIBLE. Forget the DVD, it was a real treat seeing these movies in HD.

Indy is more than likely coming out this Christmas

The original Star Wars trilogy should be out in 2006, though there is a rumor that it will be 1 original movie a year starting next year(I don't believe that though)

Well, the ABC broadcast demonstrates that a Hidef master DOES exist, and it looks (and sounds) DAMN good, so we do have something to look forward to.

Well, the most recent sign is the showing of the Indy movies on network TV. The previous sign was Spielburg saying at a talk he gave that he had recently turned down Lucas on doing commentary for Indy.

There are other signs out there, but those are 2 major recent, documented ones. Any time something is coming out with a major video promotion they run it on TV a bunch, to get those last good plays out of it

    Jeff,

I was just wondering if you had some kind of "inside" information regarding the Christmas date. It would appear these are coming soon, but we've been led down this path so often before with this trilogy and others.

The latest rumor I heard on the Indy Trilogy was Raiders of the Lost Ark this year; perhaps as early as late August. Temple of Doom would follow in 2003 with Last Crusade to be released in 2004. All of these would be two disc CE's.

SHOULD THIS RUMOR PROVE TO BE TRUE, then I might actually start believing the Star Wars:A New Hope to DVD in November of 2003 rumor.

At the rate Lucas is going, we may all be utilizing HD-DVD players before he gets all his "crown jewels" out on regular DVD!!

(Oh well ... I'm sure all HD-DVD players will be backward compatible with the current DVD standard.)

I have no specific inside info outside of rumblings. Paramount has not announced their big Christmas title for this year, and the fact that Spielburg recently declined commentary says to me that they are at the very least in production. A title of this magnitude wouldn't come out at any other time BUT Christmas

Powers of observation of trends (as well as confirmed stuff like the Spielburg thing) is what I'm basing this on

Well, I have the same thoughts based on the
    same information Jeff is posting.
As for the Star Wars films:
    All the information
coming from reliable sources says no original trilogy
on DVD until after EP3 hits DVD.
    George Lucas has
    officially confirmed that he's shot
    additional scenes to be added
    into the original film Trilogy
    to "complete the story".
    This information comes
    direct from an interview with
    Lucas on E! Daily News.
People still nag him about not wanting to do
Episodes 7-9, which he had originally thought
of way back in 1976, but the arc of Anakin's
    fall and redemption has developed
into the total arc of the 6 part story, and
three more films would be missing
    this key character.
This is why he has allowed other writers,
like Timothy Zhan, to write stories after
EP6, but nothing before EP4, and watched VERY closly
all references to events prior to EP4...
One writer wanted to make the Sith a kind
of creature, so being a "Lord of the Sith"
would mean something akin to being a "Lord
    of the Spider monkeys."
    Needless to say,
Lucas said "No way!" to that writer..which
is where the speicies the Nogri came from,
who assist Leia in the books after EP6...
they smell that she is Vader's daughter,
and follow her orders since she is of their lord.
    Back on track... [IMG]
Realise that Lucas wants people to think of
    these films as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 and not 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 so a
DVD release schedule to emphasize that makes sense.
He is in no hurry for our money on these DVDs.
He is more concerned with releasing the product
when he thinks it is as good as it can be.
Plus with more added scenes, there is every reason
to believe Lucas might even attempt a theatrical
release of EP 4-6 again, and in similar fashion:
    EP4 "Super Duper Special Edition"
for 2 weeks starting May 21,
then EP5 hits theaters a couple of weeks later,
then EP6 comes out, then the DVDs
in a nice boxed set the following summer.
(I wish I still had the link, but I remember
this was not some "speculation" thing on some
dubious website. I seem to recall is was a
    yahoo entertainment newswire notice with
    Lucas being quoted.)
    As for Indiana Jones:
    Remember that Martin Blythe
said we would be "very happy" with their output
next fall/winter. People have speculated that this
    refers to
Back To The Future, Grease, and/or Saturday Night Fever.
We all know BTTF is coming soon.
Personally, with talk of Harrison, Steven and George
tinkering with preproductoin on Indiana Jones 4,
(God help us, at this stage, word is Kate Capshaw
(aka "Speilberg's wife") will be back in this one,
since she didn't stink up enough of Temple of Doom!)
    a DVD release of the
first three seems the perfect promotional,
    buzz-generating tie-in.
    Mark
