I'm planning on setting up a new 7.1 HT system and would also be interested in what folks have to say re:in-wall/ceiling speakers (I'm also new to HT, so please keep it simple). I was thinking of using in-wall/ceiling as rear speakers; but was afraid I would be compromising sonic quality for inconspicuous speakers? The room has a high (18') cathedral ceiling and I'd think angled in-ceiling speakers might be a possibility. Any help out there?

The pros are a no-brainer: Aesthetic appeal, no real estate in the room required.

The cons are typically compromised performance: Some coloration due to the wall being a poor enclosure, loss of imaging, poor bass characteristics, etc.

The best of both worlds is usually to use regular speakers for the fronts, and in-walls for the rears.

Using the in wall for the rear and something different for the from is what I have in mind. What would be a good choise for the rear speakers. I am thinking of speaker craft. Any suggestions?

I have Proficient In-ceiling speakers in my house and I'm thrilled with them. They sound much better than I expected that they would pre-installation. Proficient is an in-wall specialist.

Philip:

I have a friend, Larry Jones in the HT Contruction area, that is wanting to put in-ceiling speakers in his house for the rears to his new HT/Entertainment room. If you could give him some info on what you found out that would be great.
