Anyone else seen the new IMDb offering? Take a look through the tour and let me know if you think it's worth 100 clams a year.

Hmmm, I hadn't heard about this. Looks like it might be helpful to professional critics and entertainment writers.

I would assume that you could write off the cost as a business expense if you are a pro. I don't know if your stuff is pro or not Scott, but if it is then I can see it cutting down time on searches for reports or informed commentary. I would enjoy the advanced box office numbers, especially for older titles which hasn't been as well covered by IMDb up to this point.

I saw this earlier in the day. It doesn't look like there is that much proprietary information that is exclusively available on the new paid site that is not available elsewhere. The danger with something like this is how much of the information that has been available for free will now be moved over to the paid site. Hopefully, none.

If they get more proprietary information above and beyond those available on their free site, $99 a year is not that bad.

Edwin's right here...look at IGN, ever since they introduced the IGN Insider, they've moved much of their content to the "pay-for" section. I think that just plain stinks...

Well, in IGN's defense, it's only in the pay-section for a day at the most. After that, the news is open to the public and it's either IGN Insider or no IGN at all. That's how things are now.

I'd be surprised if they made significant amounts of the IMDb info pay-to-play accessible only. The IMDb info was created by amateur, volunteer efforts -- and it still solicits volunteer submissions. Also, the entire database is publicly available for personal use -- yes, you can have the entire IMDb on your computer, for offline use. It can also be used in partial form, publicly, with permission (easy to get).

Some of the features of IMDb-Pro appear to be:

    - more sophisticated information presentation

    - expanded search functions

    - more tracking statistics, including more detailed and up-to-date box office stats

    - fewer banner ads

Is it worth $100? For me, no. I don't use IMDb that much, as just a movie enthusiast. But for a professional in the movie-biz, it's not too expensive to try for a year and see.

    Theo,

Amazon bought IMDB in 1998. I can remember using the site long before Amazon got involved. So far, Amazon hasn't made any real problematic changes, at least as far as I am concerned.

I seem to recall a thread where Robert Crawford said he was a member of IMDb-Pro. Maybe he can shed some light on this.

Looks like something I'd benefit from if I ever became a professional movie critic, but I can't justify the cost right now...
