What's new

I'm really bummed that Natalie Portman may give up acting after she graduates. :( (1 Viewer)

She's a phsychology major at Harvard, and she has stated in the past that after she graduates, she might stop acting.
THAT SUCKS! :frowning:
I hate the thought of losing such a talented and beautiful young actress when she's just getting her groove on.

Oh come now Todd, she's so real and down to Earth in her films, except the 'SW' films that is. :)
She has a lot of promise. She was great in both ''Where the Heart Is', and 'Anywhere But Here', not to mention 'Leon; The Professonal' back when she was 12 or 13.
It's tragic to lose her already, she has a lot of fans.

Don't worry about it John. I read in an interview the other day that she's decided to continue acting. She was asked about her earlier statement and she said that she was just frustrated at the time she said it. Making TPM was a miserable experience for her, but AOTC was a lot of fun. She said that now she couldn't imagine giving up acting. I'm sorry, I can't remember where I read that. Perhaps a Yahoo story.
And yes, Todd, she is that great. She's shown her potential in Leon, The Professional and Beautiful Girls. She's been in some not-so-great films, but has always been a bright spot in those films. She's smart, talented, and beautiful inside and out.
No one should judge her acting ability from the Lucas films. I adore the Star Wars series, but not for the acting. Lucas can make the most brilliant actors look wooden and stilted. I don't quite know why.

Natalie Portman could just turn into another Jodie Foster (ultra intelligent, great actress, and only makes good movies). I would much rather have her make less films overall and have them all be good than just continue to act and do some bad ones.

I wonder what it would be like to have a celebrity as your psychologist...

Hmm, I have a chance to be a high profile actor, earning in a couple of projects what most schlubs have to slave a lifetime to make, but...nah.
How many actors have you ever heard of voluntarily walking away from the profession?
Sort of reminds me of Mike Nichols' Primary Colors - Billy Bob Thornton's character's assessment of the guy who walked away from politics to "spend more time with his family"..."I'd rather be dad than president?"

I read Natalie had changed her mind about giving up acting, she said it has its setbacks put in the end she enjoys it to much. Isnt she in the works for a sequel to The Professional? Man I cant wait to see that.

This is one of those I'll believe it when I see it deals. I'm sure that Portman has a respectable bankroll considering the films that she's done and on top of that she would make good money as a Psychologist but it wouldn't touch her current income. It's not everyday that someone turns down a chance to earn dollars by the millions to live amongst the working class.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Morgan.

Also, from this months Premiere:

...Natalie is also the young woman who surprised interviewers by routinely claiming, while promoting her films, that she wasn't even sure she wanted to be an actress. Her smile flashes - and it's the striking, professional Natalie. "I'm in a new phase."

It isn't as definite, but the article does cover how much she disliked filming Ep 1 and how much she enjoyed Ep 2.

A valid point was made by a poster concerning thread farting in which case I deleted a couple of posts. I'm sick and tired of various members puking in threads with negative opinions that weren't requested nor needed. Since I'm a moderator, I read every thread but there are times I don't agree with every thread theme, but respect for others and behaviorial discipline allows me to suppress posting my negative thoughts because why spoil somebody else's party just because it doesn't appeal to me personally? There is a clear distinction between a discussion thread established to exchange contrary points of view versus a "lovefest" type thread such as this one. Furthermore, any further thread farts will be deleted from this thread.

Because it's all about the dollars at the end of the day, isn't it? None of us know what her feelings are towards acting and her degree subject, psychology. She may genuinely prefer psychology now that she's studied it. She may be sick & tired of the attention that acting brings to it & decide to do her own thing.

If she chooses to do something other than acting, good on her - it's her choice. her fans don't have to like it. But they should still support her for having the strength of character to do what she /wants/ in life instead of just going for the highest paid gig.

I would be very surprised to see her quit acting. Besides the amount of money she makes from it, it's obviously something she has worked very hard at to get to where she is at today. I, of course, don't know her, but her quiting acting doesn't add up. Don't forget that many people in Hollywood say many things they won't really do in order to get attention and feel righteous, I suppose. (We have all heard of certain actors and actresses threatening to leave the country if a Republican gets elected president, yet they haven't.)

Brian,

your right, the choice is all hers, but my simple point was i'll miss her.

She has such a sweet and real presance on screen that just makes me fall in love with her in every dramatic movie she does. I really hope it's true that she has changed her mind on this, I really do.

I would also like to add that I think she is the most beautiful, young actress in Hollywood today.

Robert, good on you regarding thread farting! :emoji_thumbsup:

Many, actually. They're just not high-profile names like Natalie Portman. You meant to ask "How many name actors have you ever heard of voluntarily walking away from the profession?" right? :D Most actors don't make any money or have viable working careers, and the majority of them have to get and keep regular day jobs.
I plugged "actors quitting acting" into Yahoo search and while I didn't come up with a list of names, it was eye-opening to see all the articles about actors you've heard of (ranging from Anthony Hopkins to Gabriel Byrne) who said that they had thought of quitting. Imagine all the actors who did quit before they made a name or career for themselves.
Angela Cartwright is one name actress I know about who quit acting. I'm sure there are many others I just can't think of off the top of my head.
Anyway, Natalie's not quitting, yay!

To me she was just about the only actor in TPM that didn't come off stiff and uncomfortable. Except maybe the guy who plays the emperor, he is just freaky!

And that's absolutely fine. I'd miss her acting too - she's very talented & very beautiful. I wasn't getting at you, but at the comments about why would she want to quit a high paid job.
