Hi there, I am new to this website and have a question related to the purchase of some new speakers. Firstly i'll let you know the equipment I already have.


Receiver : Yamaha RX-V765

Subwoofer: 10" Quest, borrowed it from a friend, will eventually get my own


I am looking to buy some rear surround speakers (I would like bookshelf ones) and would like some suggestions, I was thinking I would go with Soundstage since all my other speakers are this brand. I was thinking either the 3D1 or 3D2's.

I am not very experienced when it comes to home theater and am not sure if these speakers are good. I bought my other Soundstage speakers because they were decently priced compared to other brands and they sounded good in the store (Visions Electronics - http://www.visions.ca/Default.aspx).


Does anyone have any experience with this brand of speakers or have any opinions on the 3D1 and 3D2's that I posted? Any help will be appreciated. Suggest me some other brands as well, if you know of other good ones!


PS. I plan to buy from Visions so hopefully your suggestions can be bought from there!

While I don't know anything about Sound Stage speaker, they did pass the acid test of any speaker purchase. You listed to them and you liked the way they sounded compared to others in your budget. That is exactly what many of us would suggest that you do. But from the tenor of your post you may now have some doubts. If you are not happy with your current speakers you might want to purchase a new front stage (L C R) and move the Sound Stage speakers to your surround speakers, as surrond speakers won't improve the performance of your front stage.


While it is important to timbre match the front stage as you have done, the surround speakers are not as critical as they provide the background sound. but it's a good idea if surround speakers are available from Sound Stage that are in your budget. Make sure you check this out so that you place your surrounds in the proper location http://www.dolby.com/consumer/setup/speaker-setup-guide/index.html


However, your more important purchase is finding a good sub. Many of us will advise you to look for a sub from a speciality sub maker as opposed to a big time speaker maker. Give us a sub budget and I am sure members will give you some good recommendations.

Thank you for the reply, just to assure you I still like my front and center speakers, they sound great to me. I was mostly worried about my surround speakers because I was not sure if I needed to get matching speakers. But since you said that the surround speakers only add background sound I assume I could buy a different brand. Either way I will most likely just go to visions and listen to some bookshelf speakers and buy what I think sounds the best and is in my price range.

Currently I have about $300-500 to spend on either two surround speakers, or a sub. I can only afford one of the two at the moment. I was leaning toward buying new speakers before the sub since the small sub I have now sounds decent enough. But anyone can feel free to suggest a good brand of sub or even some good bookshelf speakers they have heard of.

You have 6.5" woofers in your towers and your center, so if space and budget permits, I would go with the 3D2's as they will be the best match. If you are squeezed for space or cash, go with the 3D1's.

Do you live somewhere that you can take full advantage of a sub? A house or soundproof apartment? A good sub is almost useless in an apartment that doesn't have some type of soundproofing between residences. And some subs can even overcome good soundproofing. I ask because you will get the biggest impact from a better sub. Check out the usual recommendations from the internet direct sub manufacturers - SVS, Elemental Designs, Lava Subs, Hsu Research, Epik Subwoofers
