My friend got hit on the Liberty bridge in Pittsburgh. He was in a Escort and got hit by a Dode Ram 2500 pulling a full horse trailer. He let off the brakes and bumped the person in front of him, then got hit again by the truck. The cops said that if he had not let off the brakes the Ram would have easily climbed up the hatchback and probably killed the rear passengers.

The only time I got rear-ended I saw it coming and tried to get out of the way. We were on the freeway and we had just passed signs that said wreck ahead (The irony). Well I was at a dead stop and could see the guy coming up behind me wasn’t slowing down so I tapped my brakes multiple times but still nothing. I was in the right lane of a 2-lane freeway and told my wife to hang on and then I pulled as far to the left as possible. He didn’t hit his brakes till he was about 50 ft from us. Lucky for us he glanced off the back end of our Jeep because I had moved mostly out of the way. He slid down the gravel on the side of the freeway for a good 2-300 feet so he was moving. Talk about someone who was pissed I was ready to kill the guy. Well when we got out to talk he couldn’t. He was deaf and couldn’t talk as well and neither could his wife. Talk about frustrating I couldn’t even yell at him because it wouldn’t have done any good but he was extremely apologetic which made me fell just slightly good enough not to ring his neck. It took the insurance nearly 2 months to pay because they had to get a 3rd party call center to reach him for the special phone conversation required for his input.

Same problem in my neck of the woods. I think the larger problem from following rules is the majority of people are just plainly to stupid to understand some basic princples of physics. The faster you go the longer it will take you to stop. Not a hard concept to understand. And no matter how special you think you are, if the stopping distance is longer than the distance to the vehicle in front of you, your reaction time isn't going to be quick enough to get you stopped.
It drives me nuts. Watching car after car pull out from behind a slower car and speed up to within 10-15ft of the car in front while doing close to 60mph. And of course then be stuck there because you are on a freeway with people in all lanes now. So if something happens there will be one hell of a pile up. In fact it was only a week or so ago there was a 10+ car incident on the main freeway of my little city. And I bet you none of the drivers involved understand they could have prevented it if they would have just backed off a little.
if you release the brake and you hit the guy in front of you, according to my driving instructor... you have to pay for the damage you caused him, but i think the guy that rear-ended you still has to pay for your damage.
You should come live in my neck of the woods. No fault insurance. You get rear ended and you have to pay the deductable, not the guy who hit you.
The only good thing is through this idiocy they also some how decided that rates wouldn't vary by age or sex. So it wasn't prohibitively expensive for me to drive since I was 16. Hopefully my now 8 years without so much as a speeding ticket (not sure how I've managed this as I certainly don't drive slow) will make lisense costs when I finally get out of this stupid province not to bad.

I cover my butt as quickly as possible.

Oh wait...is this about cars? :b

Getting rear-ended sucks. Messed up my neck and back for nearly a year. Luckily I'm okay now, no permanent damage! The Ford Explorer that hit me was probably doing 50 km/hr. There was an icy patch. Geez, I'm in an FWD car, and even I could stop properly. Four wheel drive doesn't mean four wheel STOP!

Todd, not an M3, but a 330i. It's not quite the same, but it saves us a bundle in payments. :D

Actually here's another one. And I don't mean to bash SUV drivers, but probably 60% of the people around here drive them and it's about 90% of the time a SUV or other oversized truck does somthing stupid around me. Anyway, I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle (Audi A4 Quattro) and when the weather is bad out I still slow down and be more careful, especially when doing things like adjusting breaking distance. The average SUVidiot around here doesn't grasp the concept that 4 wheel drive and 0 traction means 0 Traction! I mean HELLO, just cause you can start up faster doesn't mean you can stop faster. I think my car handles better then the average 4x4 SUV and I still drive well under what I know are the vehicles limits in bad weather. Drives me mad!
Ok, I'm off my soapbox... :)
