I have no idea what you are talking about regarding all caps. Every key shows in caps or non caps as the shift is held.
I don't know what either of you are talking about. On my stock iPhone 4S with iOS 5, the keys are always all-caps. But the up arrow on the shift key is either a hollow outline, or filled glowing white when pressed (and with a blue background with Caps Lock). If you long-press the vowels and some of the consonants, you see accented letters which are uppercase or lowercase as appropriate, perhaps because there is at least one difference: no uppercase double-S.
Numbers are punctuation are on the other keyboard, but you can press and hold the "123", slide over to the character you want, then release. That saves two half-gestures.

Wow, I'm the fool here. Ken is absolutely right. Weird!
And hanson: Expansive not expensive. I am saying there are both kinds, where it seemed to be you were dismissing the active ones. The active ones are the ones that eat batteries. Yes they may have a convenience factor but it is at a cost.

I'm actually not sure where we got off track, but I don't even know what your point is about widgets anymore other than that they drain your battery. That's not my point.
Ken, I'll look at the shift key the next time I'm setting up email on an iPhone. It was seriously confusing the hell out of me. Android keyboards by and large display the case on the keys, so it's very apparent if the shift is on or not.

Tony,

Started a separate thread in the mobile phones area
so not to disrupt the iPhone 5 discussion going on here.

This should give you an idea of where I stand on which
phone I want as of today. Of course, that could all change
on September 12th.

In short, both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 will be fantastic
phones and which one you decide to go with will mainly
rely on how bored you are with what you have now.

Looks like Ron already has the thread ready to go, the forum top has been updated. Finally we can break free of this oppressive negative thread title =p

Based on the strong rumors of what we have seen,

not everyone in this thread is impressed.

Of course, for others, this will be a perfect upgrade.

I doubt anything they announce will change the minds of anyone in the "Anything but apple" crowd and we already know it's not going to be a tweaker's paradise... So the OCD crowd who are 'bored' with Apple can keep on waiting for the next great alternative and the 3 after that.
But no matter what Apple announces you can bet the next iPhone owners discussion thread won't survive with as negative a title as this one, no matter who starts it =p

Sam,

Here we go again...

The overall nastiness you show in your posts is somewhat perplexing at times. You shouldn't be calling the caldron black.

I have seen your share of posts in this forum that just have me shaking my head. I'm been a victim of one thread that referred to me as "crazy."

Your overall responses in these threads is a constant challenge to anyone that thinks outside of what you feel is the Apple philosophy.

This thread's title signifies a personal opinion, in the same way as the threads you start.

I personally still feel that the iPhone 5 looks to be a dud if there is no dramatic revision. Some have agreed with that assessment. I respect those who do not.
If iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 look to be more of the same, perhaps I will start another similar thread with a title that reflects my opinion of it.

Believe it or not, my goal is to eventually get back to the iPhone brand *if* the device succeeds in surpassing the things I look for in a phone. It could happen and I look forward to it.

I suspect the marketing this time around will revolve around 8 way Facetime chat. Not that you can't do that today with OoVoo (which is also cross platform), but Apple will act like this will change everything.

Hanson,

Actually...

I don't take that approach.

I am starting to believe what Sam has previously stated...

Apple is not going to radically change their concept on making phones.

It works well for most, gets tiring for others. It's the same way that
Windows PCs allow you to upgrade and tinker to your heart's content,
while Macs come as is with little to no upgradeability.

Apple has a good thing going. They make exceptional products for
people that don't have the desire to change them. For those that get
bored with their phones or computers, they need to look to something else.

Apple will probably never make an iPhone that allows you to do the kind
of customization that Android users are used to. Apple will never release
a wide assortment of phones in different screen sizes. Basically, they will
continue down the path of "one size fits all."

...and you know what? They will probably still dominate the market in
phone sales. What they sell is simple and it works.

The thing is, if Apple doesn't add some sort of feature to market against, and if everyone is perfectly content with their iPhone, then why would anyone bother upgrading?

Sam seems insistent that the bulk of iPhone users are so content with what they have that they would never move to Android just because of larger screen and customization. And yet if that's true, then why would many users ditch their 4S for the 5? Or the large number of people who traded in their 4 for the 4S? If no one wanted for their iPhone, then everyone would have sat on their 2 year contract and waited. So clearly, the premise that almost all iPhone owners are not bored with their devices is wrong. They will likely upgrade for a larger screen and 4G. Except that AT&T and Sprint have pretty awful 4G coverage (Sprint is in like a few dozen tiny markets -- they just turned up Manhattan last week -- that is, Manhattan, Kansas). So if they drop HSPA radios, AT&T upgraders will be crying. Sprint is painful to begin with. Verzion may be the only safe harbor here, but they will push Android like crazy.

EDIT: Looks like there will be LTE & HSPA+. If they lost HSPA+, it would have been a disaster.

I am one of the most-die hard Apple owners in my area.

I join the rest of the die-hards nationally that make up
the "cult" of Apple.

People like us get made fun of all the time because of our
devotion to the Apple brand. Yet, there are thousands upon
thousands of other Apple owners who have or are joining the
same cult every day.

We live and breathe Apple.

It takes a lot for someone like me to even want to switch
over to a non-Apple device. It sweated out the decision for
days after three co-workers bought a GS3 in the same week.

I felt dirty about doing it.

I already explained why I switched. Not going to rehash it.
Thing is, despite the fact I had to find workarounds for a whole
lot of things to work with my other Apple devices, I still feel
very confident that this was the best decision I made (pending
on something revolutionary coming from Apple next week).

I am very happy with my Galaxy S3. Happier than I was with
the iPhone 4 and I suspect if rumors are correct, the iPhone 5.
You should see all the things you can customize without even
having to jailbreak/root the phone. You can make the GS3 your
own unique phone rather than the same thing every iPhone user
has. Does it make the phone better? No way! Just....different.

...but I don't sit here and bash the other camp. What has proven
to be a reliable sauce for all current iPhone users just became
boring for me. In another two years, I will probably switch back.

I'm not a member of an Apple cult. I use the tools that work best with minimal fuss. I i vestigate options and compare the experience to what I currently use and note the tradeoffs. If the pros outweigh the cons I switch. I dont make excuses for deficiencies on either side. When asked for advice I give it honestly given my specific uses and needs, not based on 'wouldnt it be cool if' or 'this product might be made to do thi better in six months'. I don't assist family members with tech problems that have been solved for 5+ years. End of story for me.

My Iphone 4s has another year on it, but if I was going to get a phone today, it would probably be a Galaxy IIIS . Android Phones have really shown the most improvement over the last few years , especaillly Android 4.1
