I don't have surround sound. So if I get AVIA Guide to Home Theater will I be able to calibrate my audio even if I don't have 5.1? I will be getting surround sound in November for my birthday so I will get AVIA. But if I got it today, would the audio calibrations work on my television speakers?

No, it won't work on your TV speakers, but the video calibrations will work.

The basic audio tests are more for balancing speaker levels in multi speaker set-ups. Even a stereo TV with 2 speakers will not gain anything by using the calibrations on Avia, and if you tried setting your TV speakers to Avia's suggested reference level of 75 or 85 db , you would most likely blow out the speakers on the TV.

Also, Even when you get a 5.1 surround system, you will still need a Radio Shack SPL meter (about $30) for setting speakers levels with the Avia dvd.

Yeah, the test tones on AVIA are pretty much useless without a 5.1 set-up. But it's still outstanding for calibrating your display device now though.

And yes, an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter is an absolute must have for anyone with a Dolby Digital and DTS set-up.

I say go ahead and get it. I saw in another post of yours that you are into tweaking your TV, and the Avia will help there. The disk is also great for learning the basics of this wildly expensive and unnecessarily complex hobby of ours. Of all the upgrades we can purchase for our systems, a disk like Avia is the cheapest that will actually make a difference.

Left and right ballance is not the same thing as being able to adjust each independant of the other, which is the point of the calibration. All 3 of my TVs have "ballance".

Just to clarify: "a disk like Avia..." I did not mean to imply Avia was the cheapest disk, but that these disks are the cheapest way to get a noticeable improvement from a system.

That's quite all right -- I just say enough stupid things that I try to only take credit for the ones I actually say. :)
