This has been a common practice for some time now. It has gotten very easy with the programs that several people have written. Check out the Tivo forums mentioned above. I finally upgraded my year old 14hr Tivo to 160 something hours with 140gigs wirth of HD.. You can also find great prices on hard drives at Newegg.com
