For what reason I don't know. At worst I'm guessing they're being stolen to be resold at a street corner somewhere for profit. I've spoken to a few neighbors and they're pretty pissed off their flags were stolen. If they're stolen for personal use, I don't see the how you could proudly display your patriotism with a stolen flag.

What patriotism? These people are stealing the American symbol of freedom. They are most definitely not patriots.

This is quite disgusting. It's a time that we Americans should be banding together, not stealing each other's property. It makes me ill to hear of this, but not nearly as much as people who are taking out their frustrations on innocent, Arab-Americans.
Simply appalling.

As for the bad rap about the characters--hey, I've seen space operas that put their emphasis on human personalities and relationships. They're called "Star Trek" movies. Give me transparent underwater cities and vast hollow senatorial spheres any day. --Roger Ebert on The Phantom Menace

My flag got stolen as well (and someone must have REALLY wanted it, because it was hanging off my window on the third floor!) But, what really pissed me off is that someone stole my bin Laden poster ("Wanted: Dead or Alive," that had a pic of bin Laden with a crosshair on his forehead).
bastard kids...

Add my name to the list of victims of flag-theft. I left for work the other day and it was gone. These people are some low-class pieces of shite. I only hope that I see my flag (the last stripe was a bit off-color..it's unique) somewhere. Ooooo, and when I do find out, these folks will be speaking to the judge.

I was in a store yesterday where customers were asking for American flags. They were sold ouuut of course. Anyway, the customer went on to explain that many of the flags in their neighborhood had been stolen. I could not believe it and now you tell me that this is obviously a widespread thing. What a piss-poor thing. You have to wonder why sometimes.

To steal your neighbour's flag, so you can proudly show your patriotism?

I also read about looting of the shops under the former WTC towers

And "Homer Simpson" in an on-line list of missing people?
Some people have no clue. We should pity them.

I read a story in the local paper of a shop owner who had a flag stolen, she got a new one from at least 2 people the day the story aired. Now she says she's going to hang it on the inside of the shop window! Another reason to take it down and inside at sunset I guess!

Add my name to the list of victims of flag theft.
Since moving into our house about 1½ years ago, we always meant to get a large US flag for display during holidays, but neglected to. When we wanted to display one after the WTC destruction, of course they were all sold out.
Driving home one day a few days later, a group of folks, all wearing name badges from a retail store (it was all too fast for me to read it, but I think it was Target, though the closest Target was 3 miles away!) were standing at an intersection giving out little flags to all passersby. It was like folks selling Sunday newspapers, but without taking any money. As we waiting at the red light, a lady gave 3 to my wife (one for each of us in the car, I suppose).
I put one inside the car in the window. I put one inside the house in the front window.
The last one I attached to my mailbox. Late last week (Thu or Fri) I realized it was gone, stolen. During dinner I mentioned this to my wife, and she was appalled.
Being inside, the other two are still there, of course. We still can't find any in stores, of any size.
But K-Mart is selling flag-themed lawn chairs! [sarcastic]I'm glad the disaster has given stores a reason to sell through their excess 4th-of-July stock![/sarcastic]

While driving home from work late last week, I noticed one of the municipalities had placed American flags on all the light posts in the downtown area. My first thought was "I wonder if anyone would try stealing them", then rejected that thought, concluding that no one would sink that low.
I guess I was wrong.

I imagine that the overwhelming majority of these thefts are by people wanting to display the flag themselves or to resell them. I have difficulty putting into words my disgust for anyone that can proudly display a stolen U.S. Flag.
However, some of the thefts may be from those not wanting the flag displayed at all. For example, I heard on a recent news program that emergency services in parts of California (Berkeley?) such as firefighters, who placed flags on their vehicles were asked to remove them. Apparently during a previous crisis, protesters there stoned fire trucks displaying the US Flag and they didn’t want to provoke the protesters.
Probably every city has numerous residents or visitors that would love to trash our flag. One flag hater could do a lot of flag thefts.
