I think my setup is wrong (1 Viewer)

ok, i think my setup is all wrong. i have onkyo 606 5.1 setup
for my surround sound speakers i have them placed three feet behind me, i don't really have a good spot to put them on the side. my question is, should i change the surround sound speakers to surround sound back speakers on the receiver? would that make a difference? i also did a audio test with pixar walle in the setup menu. when i go select each individual speaker in the setup the surround sound speakers don't come on at all but the two front speakers do come on instead.

You have to use/set up 4/5 before there is 6/7, period.
Have you set up the center and surround(in set up)?

yeah i have the center and two front speakers setup

So, you don't even have surround speakers...
Well that explains why there is no surround.

I could care less about where the speakers ARE.
In the set up in the AVR...
Do you have them "on"?

Do not connect the surround speakers to the "surround back" terminals if you're only running 5.1. The receiver will automatically mix surround back information into the surround channels but can't do vice-versa so you'll not get any surround sound connected that way excep on 7.1 source material.
