My dad just got a Samsung HD931 DVD player which looks amazing on his new Samsung 50" DLP HDTV. But he has no speakers or receiver or surround system. His budget is $1000. What would be a good way to go? Also, he prefers floor standing speakers. Any thoughts?

Ok, as a disclaimer this does not meet his preference of having floor standing speakers, so if that's a requirement this won't work. I would suggest find a Harmon Kardon receiver like the avr-325. H/K sells these things refurbished for good prices and they seem to have a pretty good reputation. For speakers I would check out the Klipsch quintets (available at bestbuy among other places) and then you would probably have enough left over for one of the low end Hsu subs or you might be able to find a good used sub.

So are you asking for $1000 what I would suggest?

Get the meanest Sub you can.

JBL S-Series would make great speakers for you.
They even have some floor standing speakers in the line.

$1000 gives you many many options to look at.

    On the cheap....

    Onkyo SR-501 6.1 reciever from ecost - $185
    Sony SA WM500 12" Sub from B&H for - $135
Yamaha NS-6490 Bookshelf speakers from etronics - $70/pair
You need three pair for the full 6.1

    Good luck....
