I'm a college student in the market for a ~150 subwoofer, until I stumbled across someone selling an Energy Xl-S8 sub for 200 (maybe lower, don't know yet). I read this forum quite often, and everyone seems nice and very knowledgable on products. I need to know how this sub performs, and if it's worth spending an extra 50 dollars, that I might upgrade my computer with. Also, I've heard a lot about the Sony subwoofer, in my price range...are there any subs I should look into, if this isn't the one for me? Much appreciated, thanx.

I have an E:XL-S8 in my audio-only system and it works flawlessly, pumping out crisp bass to the likes of Holly Cole and Rush.
While it may not be as earth-shaking as a larger sub for HT, for a small room it is perfect.

Joe, I have an Energy e:XL-S10 10" sub and love it. I chose it over the e:XL-S8 8" model, but the 'S8 is a very good sub for the money. When I went speaker shopping last year, choosing the e:XL 16s as mains and surrounds and the e:XL-C center speaker were the easy part. It was a no brainer. However, I deliberated long and hard whether to get the 'S8 or 'S10. It was tempting to save some money and get the 'S8, but I found the 'S10 provided more punch. Still, the 'S8 is a very good sub. I still remember driving the salesman crazy as I kept asking him to switch between the 'S8 and 'S10 while playing Contact on DVD. I'd go with the 'S8 for the money. In fact, I have considered buying one for a stereo system I have in a relatively small room.

It's an excellent sub but won't go LOW! You will need something bigger to get good volume at lower frequencies. Other than that it is one of the best small subs out there.

Hello and welcome!
Try and find out if you are related to Dr. Hsu of Hsu subwoofers. Maybe you can get a family discount!

lol, I wish I was related, but somehow, I doubt it. ^_^ I've heard a lot of good things about the sub, so I'm not worried about it's performance.
My last question is this: How is the price he's given me? 200.....is that reasonable for a used sub of this type? I found a site for a place in Toronto, where my family goes often, that has it for about 200 USD, NEW. Can anyone direct me to some sites that sell this sub for a better price, so maybe I can get him to lower his a little?
Thanks again for the responses, much appreciated.
