I know it's probably been brought up before, but Tom Cruise in "Born on 4th of July"

This movie was amazing. I believe it to be Cruises best role ever.

Was he even up for best actor that year for that role?

People say the movie glorified the cripple even tho he was a bum in real life, but I feel the movie captured it very well.

Cruise was Oscar nominated for his role in Born on the Fourth of July.

This has always amazed me somewhat, as I've always felt he was horribly, horribly miscast in the part and not convincing at all.

This is going to be another one of those times that I'm a minority of one, isn't it?
Ah, well. Guess that's part of what makes HTF so interesting. [IMG]

This definitely was a great performance by Cruise, but I feel his best work was done in Magnolia as Frank T.J. Mackey.
    Helluva character, helluva performance !

I thought it was an extremely powerful performance from Cruise and his best work.

I think his Frank TJ is his second best though.

Rain -- This is speculation, but perhaps you saw Cruise's action and garbage roles before 'july'. This would have typecasted him in your head, amd downplayed his performance in 'july'.

Hmm.. an example would be someone like Jim Carrey. If you watch all of his gross out comedies (and hate the genre) like Ventura, Mask, Dumb / Dumber, and Me, Myself, Irene, you'd hate the guy. Then if you watch the Majestic, you'd be watching the old 'carrey' in a serious role.

    Anyone see what I'm saying?

This movie has not held up well over time for me. When I go back and watch the movie, I see alot of overacting (edited) on Tom's part and I have tired of the anti-war bias in the movie. Tom's career was on top of the world with room to go up after this movie came out. His career choices and lack of growth in his acting ability since this movie came out really makes you wonder. I still prefer Tom in his lightweight roles such as in Rain Man and Jerry Maquire. As far as more serious roles, The Firm was not bad.

I don't know. I feel Tom portrayed the "handicapped" character quite well. Over-reacted, how and when? If anything, I have seen first hand how those who suffered from the war are and they stated this was a fine performance.

I think Cruise is growing as an actor. You have to give the man credit for picking riskier roles, and challenging himself. Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, and possibly Minority Report are all darker films which the mainstream doesn't go and see.

Whenever I hear someone criticize that Tom Cruise can't act, I steer them towards this film. The idea that anyone could consider him miscast baffles me. The emotion and intensity of his performance is magnificent. The transformation that takes place within the film is totally believable and wonderfully realised.

Tom overacting in "Born on the Fouth of July"? You have to remember, Ron Kovic was a pretty intense guy at times.

I too have always felt "BotFoJ" was Tom's breakout performance followed closely by Magnolia. Remember the scene when he tried to explain to the parents how he thought he was responsible for their son's death? The way he stammered and his voices cracked? Man, that was powerful !!!

IMHO, Tom Cruise is a very hard working, and charismatic actor. But, he has very limited range. He also tends to make excellent choices in selecting his roles. IMHO.

Indeed, Rain, it appears you stand alone, again. I will agree that Cruise did overplay the part...a bit. But, the character and his portrayel of him were so strong that the little bit of indulgence is acceptable.
