I work for travelocity.com in Sacramento, CA. We got notified on Friday that due to the damage of the travel industry; the company is downsizing and closing the Sac, CA office on Dec 4th. The nice thing is that they are trying to get us jobs by bringing in job fairs for us.
I have a couple things to fall back on but not much money for a while. Im getting a part-time job and going to school with help from my folks. I also might do the state program that pays for your school for job training in a peticular field and you collect unemployment while doing so.
Wish me luck!!

Don't worry Matthew, you'll get by. I've been laid off for 6 weeks now. Jobs around here are pretty hard to find now, unless you wanna be a short-order cook at the Waffle House. I had an interview set-up with a local business making decent money, but it was put on hold because of the terrorist attacks. I do not know when/if I'll get the interview now.

Welcome to the club. I got laid off on June 29. Had a replacement job though at a paycut 3 days later. Still searching for something better.

I will be getting my layoff notice on Friday the 12th. Luckily they are laying off so many here at Boeing Wichita they are required by federal law to give you 60 days notice. So my last day will be Dec. 14th. I plan on taking unemployement for a while. There isn't going to be many new jobs in the aircraft manufacturing sector for some time.

how's raytheon and textron doing down there? same boat as boeing?
I would hope they'd be a little better, the decline in airline travel I think will boost business aircraft sales a bit, One of my professors knows some pilots for a fractional ownership company, and said they usually get 15 or so inquiries a day, since the attacks they get like a couple thousand from businesses.
what did you do for boeing?

I am a CNC Machinist.
Raytheon,
Who I used to work for announced about 950 layoffs. So they won't be hiring.
Cessna or Textron,
Announced no layoffs but they did put a hiring freeze in place. They were previously planning on hiring about 500 this year.
Bombardier or Learjet
Announced layoffs of 250 here locally.
Don't get me wrong I don't want to take unemployment. I never have in my life taken unemployment. But with so many CNC Machinists being layed off at once... 114 just this first go around. There will not be any jobs in my area of expertise that will be available for even half what I am making right now which is 27.50 an hour. So I will not be taking any job for under 12.00 bucks an hour, it is just not worth my time. I plan on staying home and taking care of my two wonderful Children, Aiden 3 months and Shelby 4 years old.
I saw an interview with Phil Condit (CEO Boeing) on CNBC Friday and he said he can see about half of the airlines filing for bankruptcy within the next 30 to 60 days. that is not good at all.

My deepest sympathies. I'm in the same boat--and I don't have much time to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. And this couldn't have happened at a worse time--the economy is a mess right now. I believe many of us will be taking jobs that will enable us to "just get by" until the economy gets back on track.
(No kidding, but I'm thinking about applying for a job at a Melrose Avenue head shop! At least my co-workers would be more interesting than the other editors with whom I used to work at my previous gig. Problem is, how to pay a Los Angeles rent with a non-professional-level job? You do whatcha gotta do, I suppose.)

I also got laid off from a travel agency shortly after the terrorist attacks. I had the day off the day that the layoffs were happening. My boss called me, thinking I'd be at home, to tell me that he had to let me go. What he didn't know that I was on my way to a job interview. Two weeks later, I'm at a new job, and pretty happy! Keep busy while you're unemployed. You don't want to let your skills, whatever they are, atrophy.

I was hoping some of the business aviation firms would get some overflow from people not using the airlines. Guess not
