First heard of them awhile ago on the old Pantera.com forum. So I checked some samples on cdnow.com and liked them. Eventually picked up the latest album 'Clayman'. Suprisingly when I first listened to it, I didn't like it at all. Too power metal for my tastes. So I just tossed in my collection to collect dust. I came back to it and slowly started listening to it over and over and pretty soon it was fast becoming one of my favorite albums of all time.

Then I picked up the 'Colony' album. Same thing happened. Took awhile to literally grab me by the ears and tell me "WE ARE YOUR FAVORITE BAND!!!!". I just recently purchased their live album with some birthday money I received. I knew nearly all the songs on it, so I enjoyed it the first time I put it in, while finding some older songs off some albums I don't have yet.

The song 'Jotun' off of 'Whoracle' is absolutely Killer.

If I haven't said it enough already, "I love this band to death". Only wish I could see them live.

Funny, I thought no one on the planet had heard of these guys. They are uber-popular in the underground metal scene (kind of the area where Metal, Punk, Hardcore and Grind meet). I'm working on a record right now from a very similar band called PANKRATION. If you can find their first album (of monkey, of man, of wizard), which is long OOP, you should pick it up!

But In flames is really great- if you're a metal fan, you owe it to yourself to check them out.

Vince - Do they have the same guitar style as In Flames? One of the main reasons I love In Flames so much is the guitar work. They come up with a memorable guitar piece in nearly every song.

MickeS - Unfortunetly I live in North Dakota and I have a suspended drivers license at the moment. I have a few friends that like In Flames, but don't love them as much as I do. I'm sure the Slayer tour would come to Minneapolis, but I doubt I'd be able to go. Last winter they were supposed to open for Slipknot and were scheduled to come to Fargo, ND. Of course the entire tour got cancelled.

Have you heard the bands Dismember or Entombed (I'm guessing you have)? Guitarwise, their earlier material sounds quite a bit like In Flames, except much more Death Metal tinged (the voice, the beats). My favorite Entombed albums are "Wolverine blues" and "Hollowman (EP)", which is when they started to abandon some of their death metal style.
As for Dismember, their "Indecent and obscene" from 1993 sis a masterpiece in the "melodic death metal" genre, IMO.

Another band you should check out is Dark Tranquility (the vocalist in In Flames actually was in this band before), again, they're a little more death metal than In Flames, but I think you'll like it.

You might like the band Hammerfall too, but they're more speed metal (especially the vocals), they have some great guitarwork though.

Similar- often slower, but equally hooky.
They have some medium quality Demo tracks from the record we're about to start available on their booking agent's page here:

These are rough (and feature their new femal singer- some of which were cosnidering on reworking)- but worth checking out.
