I picked up ICO (pronounced Eeeco) this morning and have been playing for about an hour and all I can say is WOW!
This has to be the most unique looking game I have ever played. The detail of the characters are amazingly realistic. I played the Demo( which differs from this final version) many times and this complete game looks even better. It has a surreal, dreamlike quality that I haven't seen before.
The story revolves around ICO, a boy with horns who is in a large castle and must escape with a princess in tow, literally dragging her by the hand.
As I mentioned, the visuals are excellent. It has a somewhat bleached look but once you get outside the castle, all the colors are vivid. The greens of the grass, the water, the walls, all are perfectly detailed and realstic.
The sound is also first rate with a surprising amount of bass and plenty of directional effects.
Control is very simple and easy to get used to. The puzzles I have encountered so far are not that difficult, thankfully.
Of all the games I have played on the PS2 so far, this is the most original.
Now...back to playing this awesome game. Will post more thoughts later after I have played some more.
If you want a truly original game, get this one ASAP.

Just ONE BIG PROBLEM......
One of my fears is apparently true: ICO is short.
No, not the actual height of the kid but, the length of the game. That's what they said on Link Removed
When I played the demo on the Jampack, I remarked here how much I absolutely loved this game because it "dripped" with ethereal atmosphere, and that I hoped that when it finally was released, we wouldn't hear about how great it is but unfortunately short.
DAMN IT!!!!! Too good to be true I guess. I hit the nail right one the head, unfortunately.
Anyhoo, I'm no where near finished with it yet but, this news does piss me off. I love being in this games world so much, that I can't stand the idea of anything less that a grand adventure.
Guess we'll have to see how short it really is.
One of the visuals in this game that I've never seen of this caliber before, are the demons. They are stunning; in their own blackened, smokey way. Those brightly glowing, burning eyes and the blackened, wispy bodily forms that move so real, are downright creepy. I've never seen an enemy like them before.
...and if you've played the demo, and you think that there are only one type of demon, or...that they only walk....heh heh heh.

I've noticed that, in my case anyhow, that whenever a review (or reviewer) complains that a game is too short, it always takes me two-to-three times longer to complete than they say it takes.
I don't know if that means I suck, or the reviewers are just too good.
Probably the former... :)

Hmmm....ICO takes around 7 hours (from what I hear) if you blaze through it by finishing the puzzles quickly, and The Bouncer took less than 7 hours to conquer (as in all moves and all hidden characters at S rating). My conclusion: ICO is still more than worth it.

And as I read I'm thinking, "Man, this guy is really pissed off! I bet he just played the demo and didn't buy the game."
And then I get to this point:

LOL. If I were the developer and read your post, I would be laughing.... "MAN THIS GAME SUCKS! I'm not yet done with it, BUT BOY DOES IT SUCK. I'm gonna buy the sequel AND I BET THAT WILL SUCK TOO!"

I never mentioned it sucked. I think it's great but I hate the fact that it is apparently short.
If the concept is difficult for you to understand, please respond and I'll try to use monosyllabic words and simpler concepts.

I completely understand where you are coming from since I too hate games that are too short, however, I can't tell you how many times I have played for hours and hours longer than I thought with a game that was called "short". Happy to hear you love it as much as I do. We seem to have similar tastes in games.

Well...ICO is presenting itself as a long game for me.

Guess I shouldn't listen to game reviewers before I really get into a game.
Actually......I'm totally friggin' stuck in ICO. My brain is starting to melt down. Was kicking ass for the first few hours, nothing more than a little head scratch, take a look around, and then say "oh...so that's it".
Well, that's not the way it is now. I'm totally stuck. I swear something isn't working the way it's supposed to. Happened to me in Tomb Raider 4. Game actually had a glitch and I was stuck for days until I broke down, looked in the cheat book, and found I was doing what I was supposed to but the damn game, believe it or not, wasn't working right.
Where are you at in ICO? Did you figure out the drawbridge yet?
Spoiler:I'm past the windmill, and stuck where there's 2 pressure activated gates, knee deep water and a damn valve that doesn't do dick!!! I'm cannot, for the life of me, figure out what the hell I'm missing. Anyone been here yet?

Yeah, it's a major pain in my ass.
Well...here's what I know so far:
Spoiler:I got Yorda through the 2 pressure activated gates down there in the sewer. But, I CANNOT figure out how the hell to get her up the pipe?!!? Losing it here. Is there some way to hang onto her and drag her up it?
...is there anyway to whack her over the head and say, "Climb, bitch"!!!!!????
That valve on the pipe seems to do nothing....

Finally got around to picking this up. Also got Silent Hill2 at the same time. Talk about 2 games at opposite ends of the spectrum!
Right now ICO has my attention more. A very ethereal type of game. Character animations are great! Even though there is little dialogue - the character interactions/animations really bring them to life.
You care about the characters and that is a wonderous thing when it happens. A truly unique experience!

Lou, Im in the same boat as you. I also picked up ICO and SH2 at the same time. I played SH2 first and wasn't overly impressed (too much running around aimlessly) so I popped in Ico and haven't stopped playing (except for the occassional game of Madden 2K2). Im determined to finish this game.
While I do enjoy Ico, the camera angle is the thing that bothers me the most about this game. I swear, Ico runs around like he's hammered half the time because the angle or the way the camera moves doesn't allow you to run straight. It has caused a few untimely deaths as well.

Here's a tip:
When the game ends, WAIT until the end credits are completely finished. Nice little surprise.

So...How long did it take you to finish ICO? and was it longer than you thought it would be after all?
I too am switching back and forth between ICO and Silent Hill 2.

Tino - we all seem to be in the same boat. Was doing ICO, still doing Silent Hill 2. :)
As for ICO, after I finished it, I felt that it was, in fact, a bit too short. Not quite as bad as I might have jumped the gun on but, (guessing here), I think total time spent was around 8/9hrs to solve it. I could look at my last save time but, I'm at work.
Truly got stuck in 1 spot. The rest, I felt, was on the somewhat easy side. I'm comparing it's difficulty with the Tomb Raider series. TR, imho, was more challenging but, certainly lacked the almost indescribable atmosphere of ICO. And, there isn't a TR game that I've played that can compare to ICO's graphics.
I can only hope that there is a sequel in the works or, perhaps a prequel?
When you get to the end, you'll know what I mean.
Remember...watch all the ending credits!!

I read somewhere that they ARE working on a sequel for ICO.
I think I'm about three hours into the game since Silent Hill 2 has been taking up the majority of my playing time. I'm near the end of that game so I can soon devote all my time to ICO.
Next up is Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Soul Reaver 2, etc...plenty of great games coming. :)
