first time i saw him i thought he was just another comedian. i liked him a lot, but my appreciation towards him has grown more after seeing him in the majestic and the truman show.

how many actors out there can play serious role AND comedian role? okay, robin williams, joe pesci ( imagine home alone, and then imagine casino )...and i think thats it.

Robert de Niro (compare Analyze This and Wag the Dog with any number of films, most recently City by the Sea)
Al Pacino (Oscar-nominated for Dick Tracy as well as for a dozen or more serious roles; plus I'd call Simone a comedy)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (compare State and Main with, e.g., Magnolia)
Jack Nicholson (As Good As It Gets vs., e.g., A Few Good Men)
Robert Downey Jr. (Soapdish vs. Chaplin).
Jim Broadbent (Iris vs. Bullets Over Broadway)
Harrison Ford (Working Girl vs. Indiana Jones or the Jack Ryan films)
Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice vs. Batman or Jackie Brown)
Samuel L. Jackson (take your pick; I think he does both in Pulp Fiction)

The Oscars (especially the acting ones) are often a reward for actors who make the industry a ton of cash. Sorry, but Julia Roberts did not even deserve a nomination, let alone win for Erin Brockovich (which was a good performance, dont get me wrong) but Ellen Burstyn was robbed for Requiem for a Dream. Julia Roberts has made a lot of money for a lot of people. The same could apply to Jim Carrey. He will win one someday. He may even deserve it. Time will tell. The same will eventually apply to Tom Cruise, Leo DiCaprio, etc.

The really sad thing is that Jim Carrey, or any comedian has to do a "serious" role to get an Oscar nomination. That's so fucked up. What you end up with by that ridiculous mindset is Fred Astaire getting his only Oscar nomination for The Towering freakin' Inferno of all things. Let's face it, comedic actors get lifetime achievement awards for the work we really remember. That Chaplin guy, or that Keaton guys, after all, were just vaudevillians. :rolleyes

I personally think the Oscars are not worth anything anyways, but I do think Jim Carrey has the acting ability to give an "oscar-worthy" performance. I thought he was great in The Majestic and really hope he does more serious work. I don't like any of his silly movies, but I did like Liar Liar,The Man on the Moon, and The Truman Show.

Then I don't understand your definition of "comedian" as it applies to movies. I'd define a "comedian" in this context as an actor who's funny in a comic role. You seem to be defining it as someone who does the equivalent of standup in the framework of a movie. That rather limits the frame of reference.

Other obvious candidates:

Tom Hanks (go back and look at Splash or Nothing in Common or Punchline)
Michael Caine (hilarious in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; compare any of his serious roles)
Steve Martin (Roxanne contains both elements)
Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit? vs. dozens of dramatic roles)
Owen Wilson (The Minus Man vs. Shanghai Noon)
Gene Hackman (the first two Superman films or Young Frankenstein vs. take-your-pick)

sorry if i am not clear, michael. in my mind, a comedian stars in a movie that was built around him self. i mean, he would be the only one who could do the character in the movie. imagine the mask without jim carey, to be honest i couldnt even think anybody else except him.

i think gene hackman could fill jack nicholson's shoes in as good as it gets AND a few good men with no problem. while robert de niro could practically fill the shoes of, say, tom hanks in road to perdition. in heat, the role for robert de niro and al pacino could be swapped, and nobody would complaint...these are grrrreaat actors, but what i like about jim carrey is his uniqueness.

They could play the roles, but they wouldn't give the same performances. Likewise, all of Jim Carrey's roles could be played by others (Martin Short could handle any or all of them), but it wouldn't be the same performance.

Just to be clear: I like Jim Carrey, and I think he's a fine actor. I just don't share your view of what constitutes a "comedian" in film.

I think that Jim Carrey should have won the Oscar for Man on the Moon, and even The Truman Show. He actually won the best actor in a drama golden globe for Truman Show, but wasn't even nominated for the Oscar. I can't recall another time when that's ever happened.

In Man on the Moon I thought his acting was remarkable. He looked just like Andy Kaufman, talked like him, walked like him, and pulled it off extremely well. Yes, it was an impression, but aren't all lead performances in a biopic just drawn out impressions?
