ok, i read about this the other day and didn't view any of the videos because i didn't think they would be THAT impressive. i was pretty much expecting what happened in the first 3 videos (kinda boring). the 4th video is kinda neat. the 5th made me smile.

the 6th... damn. kinda scary how well those robots can move. =)

Okay, I'm impressed. However, these droids are a far cry from something that can operate independently. For instance, can the robots sense when they're on a rough or slippery surface? Can they compensate for any surface changes? Also, can these robots actually sense if they're balanced or not? We have three loops in each ear with fluid circulating through them that do an excellent job of telling us if we're standing upright or falling down. Do the robots have any equivalent capability? Will a simple nudge tip them over?

There's actually a thread about this already, but it didn't have the links to the rest of the videos [IMG]

Francois: If you look at the official site, which is linked in that other thread, I believe it says that the robot CAN sense if it's off balance, and I think I read it can climb slopes and stairs (obviously small ones [IMG])

This reminds me of Honda's Asimo robot, though I haven't found a video of it dancing so well [IMG] It can walk more realistically than QRIO though, and climb regular size stairs, since it looks like it's around 4 feet tall.

I'm not sure about the QRIO, but the Asimo robot does sense balance and try to compensate. If you push the Asimo, it either pushes back or walks backwards to stay upright.

These pages seem to point out QRIO can walk on uneven surfaces, slopes, and maintain it's balance, or cushion itself in falls. Just imagine what types of bipedal robots we'll see in 10 years [IMG] Maybe I CAN have a robot maid to do all the household chores for me [IMG]

    Very cool.

Certainly fine examples of the best that technology has to offer.

Can we name him " Number 5 " or "Jonny 5"?

Honestly, I don't care how stout Sony made him, my kid nephews and nieces would tear it to shreds before I got the first bill.

    It is cool though!
