Today I just got around to begin watching Hunt for Red October which I recorded to my DVR last week off of the "Universal HD" channel on DirecTV. I was somewhat shocked to discover that the beginning section of the movie in which Connery and his crew speak in Russian was not subtitled in English. I tried turning on the captions and they still did not appear.

What gives? Did anybody else happen to catch this?

That's freakin' hilarious. That is some serious sleeping at the wheel.

The SD DVD contains the subtitles as a normal part of the movie (you don't have to turn them on).

Regarding the SD-DVD:

IIRC, not all the dialog at the beginning that is spoken in Russian, is subtitled. Only some of it.

Why would something recorded from TV to a DVR be categorized under High-Def software? The thread police really need a vacation.

It was on AMC or something (plain old SD analog cable) a month or two ago, and there was the same problem. No subtitles for any of the Russian, neither at the beginning, nor toward the end. I guess they must be sourcing from a new print without the subtitles burned in.

Sorry, I thought he was talking about a HD disc of this title. I always took TV Programming to refer more to the actual shows themselves, usually TV series.

Since we are talking about the cable channel's presentation of the movie I think this is the appropriate forum.

I noticed this too, though not right away. I like this movie and have watched it several times so I was mostly understanding what they were saying. Then I said, "wait a minute, something's missing."

Seems like just another example of not taking enough pride in the product you put out and and saving a few bucks by not giving a %$#@.
