I have a couple of decent components (HDTV, DVD player) for a basic setup and would like to add a relatively inexpensive surround sound setup. The Onkyo hts760 looks like very good system for $500. Would I be missing something by going for this setup or would a "better" system be significantly more expensive?

As far as home-theater-in-a-box systems go, the Onkyo you are looking at is one of the best. For $500 for a receiver, speakers, and sub you would be hard pressed to do much better. The only other candidates I could think of would be a refurbished Denon 1403, JBL NSP1, and Sony WM500 sub, or the same receiver and the AR HC6 package, but these could push you over the $500 mark after shipping, but would sound noticeably better.

J&R also has the HTS760 refurbished for $300, so you may want to consider that if you like the system and want to save some money.
