I have a HTM MX-500 remote right now, I have macros set right now to power the whole system on and off. Also macros to components on and off and switch inputs between sources. Is there a way to find codes or use a seperate remotes to program the MX-500 remote to have seperate on and off buttons instead of the generic power button, which can sometimes cause the macro to not work right. Here are the components that I need seperate on and off buttons for.

Sony NS725P DVD player
Toshiba 42H82 TV
RCA standard directtv sat receiver

Any help would be appreciated

The best way is to purchase an inexpensive One-4-All remote that you can program advanced/discrete codes into, then learn the discretes to the MX500. You are lucky in that all your devices appear to have discretes available.

Start here:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin...e4all/list.cgi

The Sony and RCA should be easy, most all their products use the same discrete codes:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/discrete.shtml
RCA device code 0566 or 0392, Discrete On 227, Off 219
Sony device code 0533, Discrete On 113, Off 109

Newer Toshibas are device 0156, Discrete on 006, Off 010
http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?TV_0156

Basically you program the standard internal device codes into the One-4-All following the instructions they provide with the remote, then you can map an advanced/discrete code to any key of the One-4-All that can then be learned into the MX500.

Depending on your OFA model, it would go something like this:
1. Program the DVD, SAT, TV buttons of the OFA using the codes provided in the OFA instruction sheet (they should be same as above - Sony DVD 0533, RCA Sat 0566 (or 0392), Toshiba TV 0156).
2. press the Device key that you have already preprogrammed
(for example the DVD button you have selected as Sony)
3. press SET or SETUP and hold until the LED blinks twice
4. enter 9-9-4, LED will blink twice
5. press SET/SETUP, do not hold, LED blinks once
6. enter the advanced/discrete code (the 3 digit one)
7. pick a key that the code will be programmed to and hit it
LED will blink twice.

You now have your discrete code programmed to a key on the OFA remote. Test it on the device to see if it works.
Set the MX500 into Learn mode and learn that key to one on your MX500.

Do that for all devices you need discretes for.

Thanks again I picked up a One For All 6131 tonight. After a little bit of reading mostly re-reading your post I got the discreet codes working on all my components, then was able to easily learn them to my HTM MX-500. Finially I have macros that work like I want (no more sat receiver staying on)! I am printing out a copy of your post to keep with my other manuals

Glad I was able to help.

Rob and all the people that contribute to the hifi-remote and jp1 websites are the real ones to thank. There is a huge wealth of info available on those sites.

Enjoy your MX500, I wound up getting 2 and an irClone :)
