Man, I'm SO far out of the loop this year ... 2004 has been a very big year of changes for me, and unfortunately my filmgoing has suffered for it.

Jason's correct, though -- after most people have had a chance to catch up and see the last of their 2004 list (myself included), I'll post my stats compilation, probably late in January. It'll come in handy when comparing to the films listed in the Oscar thead. [IMG] Myself, I don't think I've seen a single Oscar-potential film in 2004 - well, except for the dark-horse candidate Eternal Sunshine. Looks like I've got a lot of work to do!

I go by what I saw between 1/1-12/31/04 so I'm not still second guessing for months after the end of the year or holding out mentioning films until they get wider distribution. Anyway, here's my list:

    01. The Story of Marie and Julien (Jacques Rivette)
    02. The World (Jia Zhang-ke)
    03. War at a Distance (Harun Farocki)
    04. Los Angeles Plays Itself (Thom Andersen)
    05. Last Life in the Universe (Pen-Ek Ratanaruang)
    06. Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow (Theo Angelopoulos)
    07. Kings and Queen (Arnaud Desplechin)
    08. 2046 (Wong Kar-wai)
    09. Bad Education (Pedro Almodóvar)
    10. Moolaadé (Ousmane Sembene)

    Honorable mentions:
    The Seventh Day (Carlos Saura)
Born into Brothels (Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman)
Persons of Interest (Alison Maclean and Tobias Perse)
    Notre musique (Jean-Luc Godard)
Michelangelo Eye to Eye (Michelangelo Antonioni)
    Truth and Poetry (Peter Kubelka)

Made a couple of changes to my list, notably entering SHaun of the Dead at number 7, upgrading Garden State to 6, and dropping Shrek 2.

I put up the first version of my list on page 1. I still have some notables to see like Million Dollar Baby, but I suspect that my list is near being complete.
