With the way voting went in some cases, I'll bet you fanboyism had a lot to do with it. :)

Well that, and there are really awful movies out there.

Well Martin in one sense I agree with you 100%. On the other hand, you and I have very different opinions about which films are truly awful. Nevertheless, someone who gives out 0s to films they feel are truly awful, and a lot of 10s to films they feel are great, can't exactly be said to be stingy with their votes, simply not in agreement that all 1200 of the films in this thread were masterpieces, or even good enough not to be deemed truly awful.

Or, they might be said to have certain bizarre biases which prevent them from acknowledging that there are SOME good things about movies with which they otherwise have some kind of personal or political objection to.

They might also be said to be trying to skew the scores by voting in a more extreme manner than they would otherwise vote.

If I'd known statistics might actually be useful, I would have skipped fewer classes.

I'd like to know the % of the films I've seen.

Great work Jim!

Justin needs a "special" award for snagging a spot on both of the last two categories. :D

Well, I'm not the one who included Tootsie, Ghost, The English Patient, A Beautiful Mind and Ghostbusters among the 50 worst films. :)

Check my sig and see how many times I've been bitten in the ass.

Well said, Martin.

Anyhow, I consider being in the top 3 of the folks who gave out the least number of 0's -and- 10s, well I consider it about right for me. Logic would tell you that there are very few 0 and 10 movies out there.

My only real point being that the major disagreement I have with voters like Martin and John Thomas isn't necessarily one of central tendency so much as variability. I think there's a huge range of films in this list from the absolute greatest to absolute drivel. John and Martin and others find "very few 0 and 10 movies out there."

and is a Top 50 pre & post what you're looking for?

I agree with that except that I fall in line with Walter feeling that even the films of absolute drivel have some moments of redemption. On a 1–10 scale, I can’t imagine that I’d find a film with no redeeming features. Of course its possible. On the other hand I find a lot of films on the list that deserve a 9 or 10 (which I equate to the masterpiece category).

I think that if I’d seen (or remembered them well enough to vote) as many films on the list as Justin, I would have a lower average score.

I'm more interested in the user lists, rather than more film lists. It would be nice to see for each person:

1. the ratio of pre-SW:post-SW films seen

2. difference in mean scores: s/n - S / N
where
s = sum of all user's votes for pre-SW films
n = number of pre-SW films they voted for
S = sum of all user's votes for post-SW films (inc. SW)
N = number of post-SW films they voted for

order the list by criteria 2. Anyone with a high ratio for 1 and a high positive score for 2 is then officially a classic film snob. Anyone with a low ratio / negative score is a multiplex junkie.

I'm choosing Star Wars because it's a common cut-off movie that people use to class film fans (and because it's very almost as old as I am).

BTW, Jim, you should do an HTF Film Challenge for our Top 100. :)

Right, hence the /range/ being from 0-10. However, I wouldn't say there were more movies that rate a 10 than say 7. Of course this is my opinion and I can accept that others have varying opinions other than my own.

Phillip,

I can do that. If I have time in the next couple of days you'll see the Star Wars list, otherwise I should get to it this weekend. Same with the Academy stats.

ugh, more data entry. :frowning:

I'll try going through the list by memory this weekend. If I have to look up more than a handfull of these I don't think I have the time or energy.

You know, I've been pondering this, and one thing I realize from this exercise is that a 10 point scale isn't a very good one for me personally to use to rate films. I tend to make global distinctions between films (love, indifferent, hate), and finer distinctions within those categories. I realize that on a 100 point scale the films I love would all rate between 90 and 100, the ones I don't care for (but are well done) would be between 45 and 55, and the ones I hate would all be between 0 and 10.

I'm not saying that there was anything wrong with using a 10 point scale for this, I'm just ruminating on how I probably didn't use it very well, since I sort of felt the need to distinguish between films, and so I gave 7s or 3s, when in reality, there are probably damn few films that I feel that way about.
