I saw the new restored 35MM print on the big screen tonight, and it looked simply spectacular. The colors, flesh tones and detail level and are so amazing that it looks like a recently photographed film. The only signs of age this print shows are the 1960s clothing and cars. Bravo MGM.
Interestingly, Ron and Peter (DVDFile) had different opinions on the outdoor scenes.
Ron:
Unless something happened during the film to DVD conversion, I have no clue what Peter's talking about. Ron's comments are dead on accurate. The outdoor scenes always looked washed out and too bright in the other prints and various home video versions I've seen. I always figured that the DP just didn't know how to photograph something in natural light. But now, they simply look perfect like the rest of the print.
Interestingly, the sound track was in mono, yet it still sounded quiet good. I suspect that it too was also cleaned up.
The only downside is that we have to wait a month for the DVD.
