On another note, what did Spielberg not like exactly? The violence? I would've thought if he didn't like it as much, being the director he could've had more say. Maybe he just went along with it for George....

A question for those who have the disc: I've only seen a handful of Paramount DVDs but about all of them start off with lengthy logos, warnings, etc that are unskippable. () Do these discs have have the same thing? Just curious. Thanks.

Thanks for the review Scott! This DVD set is the biggest no brainer of the year. I remember playing Indiana Jones as a kid with my cousin. We really thought we were going to find the Holy Grail in my backyard, lol. I've waited years for this DVD and it's a week away!!:D

Menus come up immediately after inserting the disc. After selecting "Play" from the menu, the only unskippable screen is the MPAA rating... but I believe you can bypass that by going to the chapter selection, and choosing ch 1.

This applies for the movie discs.. if I recall correctly, the bonus disc has an unskippable disclaimer due to the interviews...

Ok, I will go on record and officially declare that Raiders is the least favorite of the Indy films for me. I have no idea why but it’s less fun than the other two and maybe because I saw TOD first. Also I have to add that for many years I believed that if there is one movie best representing Indiana Jones, it’s TOD. It’s a lot of fun, it’s exotic, dark and I like the over the top fantasy fell of it. My problem with Raiders is that maybe it’s too realistic and serious (compared to the other 2)!!! Anyway Raiders is less fun for me, I can’t help it!

Doom - sound is sharper and lighter as expected.

EE on long shot of rope bridge.

still going through Last Crusade...I'd say the most impressive disc would be Raiders for improvement.

Last Crusade - there's EE everywhere, but not really noticeable. A few out of focus shots, and overall softness compared to Raiders and Doom. Contrast slightly washed as well.

I never liked the green screen effects used in Doom and Crusade, very cheap. The explosions were also fake looking, except for actual ones. Not enough budget?

Anyway, enjoy!

Here to Indy 4!

Scott,

Thanks for another excellent review! I sold my VHS copies years ago because I just knew these were going to come out on DVD at any time (just like the original Star Wars films) :frowning: . As a result, the only time I have been able to catch Indy is when he appears in all of his overcompressed, pixelated, fullscreen glory on cable.

I am glad that this set turned out so great, and October 21st can't come fast enough!!!!!

Regards,

Jason

Just got me the Box Set.

Yep, got it for an advance review. I liked it a lot, buutttt...

...there IS some digital tinkering/alterations/cut scenes in the three movies. I won´t tell you where, but if you´re as purists as you were with THE LION KING, then the box set can be easily considered a no-sale.

It is now known that there are 14 picture changes done to the films, as publically revealed by The Digital Bits. The snake reflection when Indy falls into the Well of Souls is one. The pole supporting the boulder is the other. Care to tell us some of the other 12 that you seem to have found?

Nah, those are the GOOD alterations.

The "bad" alterations involve, for one thing, the whipping of Short Round.

I won´t list all the changes cause, frankly, I don´t care. The ONLY movie alteration that really bothers me is Greedo shooting first. And not because Greedo shoots first, but because the retooled scene ended up pretty ridiculously done.

Uh oh, I think I hear the sound of trickling water, indicative of a dam that's about to break.

I suppose I'll find out soon enough whether or not to be thankful that I still have my Widescreen VHS box set.

If they made changes to the story and/or characters, don't you think we would have heard about it before now?

I am not biting...yet.

If I remember the theatrical cut correctly, Short Round was only whipped once. Indy, on the other hand, was whipped several times.
Three times, and he cried. Since then, that scene was reduced for every LD and VHS release.

Again, that doesn´t affect the plot. Okay, Indy is beating his good little friend. We get the point, no need to linger.

Are we talking about the same scene?

There is one scene where Indy and Short Round are tied up in a dark room. This is where they make Indy drink the blood. In this scene, Indy gets whipped a lot and Short Round does too (although only once as far as I can remember).

The other scene is when Willie is being sacrificed. Short Round makes his escape and tries to save her. Indy takes Short Round aside and strikes him...only once again as far as I can remember.

Can anyone else help us out?

Both scenes were sweetened. In the second one, Indy hits Short Round twice.
