The 40-Year-Old Virgin - Unrated Edition Studio: Universal Studios Home Video Year: 2005 (2005 Release) Rated: Unrated Aspect Ratio: 1.85x1, enhanced for 16x9 displays Audio: English DD 5.1; French DD 2.0; Spanish DD 2.0 Captions/Subtitles: English SDH; French and Spanish Subtitles Time: 2:13 Disc Format: TBD Layer Switch: TBD Case Style: Keep Case The Feature: The 40-Year-Old Virgin tells the story of a nice guy named Andy (Steve Carell) who never got around to getting it on. Andy collects toys, has movie monster standees, a framed Asia poster (as in the supergroup), rides a bicycle, and fixes a mean omelette with delicately sliced fruit. Is he a virgin? Is there any doubt? Andy works in an electronics store. When his coworkers reluctantly invite him to play poker, he joins, but when the conversation turns to sexual conquests, his story does not pass muster. And so starts the quest of Andy's well-meaning coworkers to get him laid. The coworkers themselves are an interesting lot. Jay (Romany Malco) is the lead instigator and is quite the player, but is scared to death of his girlfriend. David (Paul Rudd) has broken up with his girlfriend--it would seem, years ago--and can't get over it. He is two steps away from going postal over the Michael McDonald video that is constantly playing in the background. Cal (Seth Rogen) is just slightly over baked. These cherry poppin' buddies take Andy out on a number of excursions. One is to a bar to pick up a woman who is drunk. (She turns out to be a drunk driver.) Another trek is to have Andy's chest waxed. (OUCH! Or perhaps I should say @#$% !@#!* @#$()@#$!!!) David gives Andy his box of porn. Then the whole crew goes speed dating over lunch. Through all the mania, Andy finds Trish (Catherine Keener) who works across the street as an agent selling items on eBay. They hit if off and start dating... but after a disastrous near-miss in bed, they decide to have 20 more dates before getting physical. Normally, that would be an end of all hope, but at this point, if you've waited 40 years, what is another 20 dates? The 40-Year-Old Virgin is raunchy to be sure (and even more so in this unrated edition) but at its core it is rather sweet. Andy really is a nice guy, and although there is some ribbing from his coworkers, they really do want to help bring Andy out of his shell. The movie is also very funny. I laughed until tears were streaming down my face during a couple of scenes. Director and co-writer Judd Apatow assembled a great cast of comic actors and comedians who, as it turns it out, improvised a large amount of the dialogue. That it holds up so well is even more impressive. The 40-Year-Old Virgin DVD is available in separate R-rated and unrated editions. The unrated edition is 17 minutes longer. The commentary on the unrated edition points out which scenes were added or where alternate scenes used. Some of the unrated moments were trims for time, some were clearly for content. But even when you cut out extra nudity, dog sex (I mean actual dogs here), and language, the R-rated version still has to be fairly raunchy. I will have to see it to compare. Even the menu sounds on this disc are crude, but what would you expect for adult entertainment? And see it I will. This was a very fun movie. The Feature: 4.5 / 5 Video: I'm going to wait to see final product before commenting on the video quality of this 1.85x1, enhanced transfer. This disc was watermarked, and since that might have interfered with the image, I want to see it in final form. Video: ? / 5 Sound: This movie was mostly talk and music. Dialogue was firmly centered, and music was mostly in the mains. There are three soundtrack offerings on the disc, English DD 5.1, Spanish DD 2.0, and French DD 2.0. There is also a commentary track (more on that next). Sound: 3.5 / 5 Extras: Both the rated and unrated editions include a variety of supplements. Missing from the unrated edition is a vintage 1970s sex education film, but taking its place for those who certainly don't need it anymore (and exclusive to the unrated edition are):
  • My Dinner with Stormy - a brief segment with Seth Rogen "interviewing" adult film actress Stormy Daniels. You know you've made it big in Hollywood when an adult film star has a temporary tattoo of your head on her breast.
  • More Deleted Scenes with commentary by director / co-writer Judd Apatow and actor / co-producer Seth Rogen. Without the rated edition to compare, I can not be certain, but I believe these are:
    • A scene between Cal and Paula
    • An extended scene of Advice from Mooj (I'm still blushing)
    Finally, the unrated edition includes:
  • Alternate (and full-Stormy-frontal) Andy's Fantasies. I love the newscast. Both editions include:
  • A feature-length commentary with Judd Apatow, Steve Carell, and the cast - this commentary is a riot. The cast had a lot of fun recording this, and it shows.
  • Deleted Scenes - with commentary Apatow and Rogen
  • An extended You Know How I Know You're Gay? (all improvised, and very funny)
  • A behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the Waxing Scene - this hurts. That was real hair!
  • An extended Date-A-Palooza sequence - very funny, but too long
  • Alternate takes on the same line in the Line-O-Rama - yet another great example of the improvisational skills of the cast.
  • An entertaining (and somewhat gross) Gag Reel (but the bit with Mooj was great--any time you get Steve Carell laughing that hard, you know it must have been a wild day on the set) Extras: 4 / 5 In Conclusion: The 40-Year-Old Virgin was one of the best reviewed movies of the year, and it receives a nice DVD release just in time for holiday parties with your friends. I can honestly say it is the funniest movie I have seen in a very long time. Overall Rating: 4 / 5 Recommended Release Date: December 13, 2005 Display calibrated by Steve Martin at http://www.lionav.com/

I've heard nothing but good things about this one, surprisingly. I'm not big on modern comedies, but your excellent review seals the deal. Happy to see there are some good extras on board as well.

Thanks again for the great review, Steve. :emoji_thumbsup:

Apatow's Freaks and Geeks is one of the best high school shows ever--it's a shame it did not make it past one partial season.

I saw this last night on DVD. I had heard a lot about this and surprisingly it was a lot nicer than what I imagined (it was the unrated version with the extra stuff).

Anyway somehow it felt nicer than for example an American Pie movie even if it has the same kind of jokes, it felt different. And since we are all geeks here, be careful you might never buy an action figure again after seeing this! :D

How very odd this is not on the unrated SE. Thanks for the reveiw, Steve.

This is the funniest movie of this year, much better than Wedding Crashers. Actually, it's one of the best comedies in years.

Sam, to me at least, American Pie goes for a teen or twentysomething audience, where as 40YOV goes for the 30+ crowd.

While this is indeed the funniest film of the year, I'd also go so far as say it is one of the better films of the year as well. It isn't some cheap comedy (like WEDDING CRASHERS which I didn't like), but it has a real heart to it, that is more than just the laughs.

Normally, I always suggest at least Netflixing a title before buying, but I think I can safely say this is a good blind buy.

I will be getting it this week. Will be funny to see it again, now that I've gotten to be a huge fan of Carell's version of THE OFFICE.

I have to say I am disappointed that the original Theatrical versions is not Widescreen. The longer version is good but the Theatrical is better.

Also, my copy Froze towards the end of the film:frowning:

If you're an Apatow fan, seek out "Undeclared" as well.

It was heartbreaking that both this and "Freaks and Geeks" disappeared from TV so quickly.

I'm really looking forward to this release. As indicated above, the movie has a nice balance of raunch and tenderness that I liked. Not for everyone, but I found myself blushing:b , laughing my rear off and enjoying just about every minute of it. I hope the extended version doesn't mess with the balance I saw in the theaters.

How much will you guys pay me to not post pictures from yesterday's chest waxing event in Los Angeles? :D

I am very surprised that Universal would only release the R-rated version in full-screen only. This almost sounds like a concession to Walmart.

No sale. I don't even see it at Netflix, so I won't be renting it. I actually was looking forward to comparing the two versions.

I was listening to the MN (93x) waxing this morning. Those guys sounded in a tremendous amount of pain. I can link up pictures when they go out to the website.

I saw clips on the news last night of the chestwaxing in L.A. Man alive, I can't believe anyone would agree to that. One of them should have shouted "Kelly Clarkson!" though, now that would have been funny :D

Here's something sad that I will admit to right here and now...I collect action figures, and they are mostly horror related. :b

I missed this in theaters but am all over this dvd, i'm 100% positive that I will love this film.

Also, that pic of Carrel on the cover is a scream, he looks like a complete dork LOL!
