Since I rent for free, I'll probably watch this one over the weekend(or in the next few days, depending on when we get ours in). Music is a big part of my life, and I've had several instances where I didn't like the music, and the film was less than enjoyable for me.

I'll give it a look-see!

While my reaction to the film was more along the lines of "conception - brilliant, execution - disappointing", I did not find the use of modern songs distractingly anachronistic a la "A Knight's Tale", so if that was your main concern, Robyn, I would rest easy.

I guess the old adage is true for the most part...HTF members are knowledgable about DVD but don't have much taste in films...... Moulin Rouge

I have yet to see this movie and yet i love the soundtrack.

I havent gone through the specs of this movie but is it ok to watch with a family. If I recall it has to do with prostitutes? I dont want to sit with the family and my sister and have this movied turn out to a porno.

I went into a local retailer today to kill some time before work and saw that they had some Moulin Rouge dvds sitting on the shelves. So naturally I picked one up (wasn't this supposed to come out next week?). Unfortunately, I won't get a chance to watch it until tomorrow. Wait, Vanilla Sky comes out tomorrow. Darn it all!

Fox did a fantastic job with the DVD of Moulin Rouge . I remember when I saw it in a theater how wonderful and, I dare to say, splashing the colors were from this picture. It was a great movie experience and now, with the DVD, you get that same feeling. DTS is the way to listen to the movie. Maybe the track is a little louder than the DD one, but I thought it had more depth and a better "enveloping" sound.
Highly recommended.

err, sorry - you lost me there Matthew. Something about taste and liking one of the most outstanding, original, brilliantly shot, uplifting films of the year? Or should I stop feeding the trolls?

Ruben - Everything should be fine. While the idea of it being part of Satine's job to sleep with people is part of the plot, the most explicit it gets is some rather lacy underwear modelling from Kidman.

I would hope that you meant to say your taste in films.
Actually, no. I've seen other members who feel this way in other forums also. That's why i referred to it as "the old adage". I really didn't mean to offend anyone, I was merely expressing an opinion. Everyone has their own tastes.

I, too, found Moulin Rouge to be the most moving film of the year. I was moved straight to the exit after 30 minutes of camera-swirling, hammy acting and incongruously modern show-and-pop tunes.

But I also have to add my voice to the chorus of praise for Ron's review. He did an excellent job of articulating his admiration for the film and the reasons for it.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

OK, "Moulin Rouge" is now the official new leader for Easter Eggs on DVD. This title has fifteen easter eggs, and at least three of them are next to impossible to stumble upon.
At a Moulin Rouge release party in Toronto, they gave us a cheat sheet and martinis for everyone.
Complete details on how to find the eggs are here.

I finally got around to watching my copy of Moulin Rouge last night. I must say that I quite enjoyed it even though I'm don't usually "get into" musicals. I now see why people are calling it the disc of the year. Very nicely done, Fox! Now I have to finish slogging through the extras...

BTW, does MGM have the rights to the 1952 film Moulin Rouge? Directed by John Huston and starring Jose Ferrer as Toulouse-Lautrec, this film one an Oscar for its art/set direction and costume design. I think it'd make an interesting double-bill with Moulin Rouge 2001.

I just want to stick my nose in here and recommend HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH to people who liked Moulin Rouge. It's a fun campy musical about a sex change gone wrong, and has some incredible ORIGINAL music by Stephen Trask.

Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite films of this year and I can't wait for the DVD.
Now I had the DVD in my hands, sitting in my house, sitting right on my computer desk, but due to some error (which is Deep Discount DVD's fault :)), I'm getting two copies (the copy I'm keeping comes on Monday). So I sold my copy on eBay so I don't overdraw my checking account. :frowning: I can't wait for Monday to come and I can finally watch it.

Ron, it seems like it was only a few months ago that you posted your first review with apology as not being a professional reviewer. I find that your reviews continue to get better and better and provide a certain warmth and feeling missing from so many (if not most) reviews. To me, your reviews read like a friend telling another friend of his experience with a film, not just a description. Your reviews set a new standard and are the first thread read when I log on to HTF and see a new one listed.

Many thanks for even another contribution to the already excellent HTF.

On a side note: Matthew, who's the lady in the picture next to yours in your signature? Are we supposed to know her? She looks a bit like the lead singer of the 80's band "Missing Persons". :) No offense, of course.

David I think Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons might be a little upset you compared her to ......ahem...er..."her?".

Well, I watched it.

I was annoyed by parts of the music, and there were parts of the musical presentation I just downright didn't like. I'm just not a period-piece-with-modern-music kind of person. To each thier own.

However, I did like the film. There were many fairly cool looking things that the movie did. The dvd also looks really good. I don't know that I could say it was the best of the year, but definately good for those who enjoyed the movie. I hope we continue to see releases like this.

Robyn
