I had to kill his commentary after a while cause I was getting film school flashbacks. Did he give a pop quiz during the second hour? I'm guessing after his class there's plenty of empty Red Bull cans on the floor.
Casper certainly works within the dominant symptomatic approach to film criticism. He tries to relate nearly everything in the film back to social issues in play when the film was made. Personally I think it is much more valuable to look at that film as an example of early CinemaScope filmmaking. I don't think it is a particularly good example, but it at least demonstrates a general approach. Same goes for The Student Prince, a film by the same director, made in the previous year.
I listened to half of Drews commentary. I found it wildly entertaining. He so loves the movie, but watching the movie, it's like, HOW can he love the movie THAT much?!?! And I laughed and laughed.
