An act of love, or an act of murder?
So here it is, a slow week at the office, and I
am looking for something interesting to review that
I may have overlooked previously. I notice the
box for Body of Evidence, a film that promises
to be an erotic thriller. What the heck? Let me
put it in the player and give it a spin.
    [IMG][IMG]
Well, folks, what a waste of an afternoon. What
the filmmakers may describe as "erotic" is simply
full frontal nudity with lots of rough, kinky sex
that it isn't at all sexy. Nipple clamps. A belt.
Hot candle wax. Cold champagne. A shattered light
bulb. The hood of a car. Is this supposed to be
erotic for us to watch? It looks more rehearsed
than anything else. It's a shame that this entire
movie was sold on its sexual content. All of
    looks completely boring!
    [IMG][IMG]
The story itself is just as much an embarrassment
as the sex scenes. As the film opens, we see a
dead man, handcuffed to his bed, watching a videotape
of himself and Rebecca Carlson (Madonna) having wild
sex. When Rebecca is implicated in the murder, she
relies on Attorney Frank Dulaney (Willem Dafoe) to
defend her. Against his better judgement, the
married attorney begins a hot, highly immoral
extramarital relationship with Rebecca. There are
scenes after scenes of laughable moments of Madonna
shedding her clothes, exposing her ample breasts, and
even masturbating herself in order to entice
lovemaking. In the end, Frank begins to believe
that Rebecca isn't as innocent as she claims to be.
    How is the transfer?
Overall, the transfer is pretty good although
the film looks slightly dated. Picture is generally
on the soft side, lacking sharpness, and containing
slightly high red color levels. There's even some
noticeable (but brief) scratches and dirt to be
    seen periodically.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 mix is surprisingly good for
the fact that there is a noticeable amount of ambient
activity across the rear channels. This ranges from
background noise in a busy restaurant to the echoes
of a courtroom to the sounds of nature's elements.
Sound is more in the upper ranges here with a lack
    of bass response.
    Special Features
    [IMG][IMG]
When Body of Evidence was first released in
theaters a huge ratings controversy erupted over
the film's strong sexual content. The MPAA rated
the original cut of the film NC-17. In response,
director Uli Edel cut two minutes of the explicit
sexuality and the movie received an R rating.
Body of Evidence is presented in both versions
    on this double-sided DVD.
The glossy, 5-minute featurette Love or Murder
is easily forgettable. It's an attempt to showcase
Madonna as a serious actress, with her co-stars giving
her far more credit than she deserves.
The film's original theatrical trailer is
    included here as well.
    Final Thoughts
Anyone who wants to get their jollies watching
Madonna's nude body may opt to take this title home
for an evening. Frankly, I don't think getting naked
in a movie qualifies you as a professional actress
any more than typing a review qualifies me as a
    professional reviewer.

hee hee, the guilty pleasure gets even guiltier after reading your review, Ron!
Granted, there's tons of titles I want in December, as well as the fund shortage that is known as Christmas, so I probably will pass on this title, even at $9.99.
But if MGM puts it at $7.99 or lower in January or later, I'm going to spring for it! [IMG]

Speaking as someone who accidentally rented this film (don't ask) and couldn't get more than about a minute in, I love the comments made in Roger Ebert's review:
"I've seen comedies with fewer laughs than Body of Evidence, and this is a movie that isn't even trying to be funny," and "[Madonna] nails down her title as the queen of movies that were bad ideas right from the beginning."

Hmmmmm...slow week, eh? "Erotic thriller"??? Naked Madonna??? I'm 99.999% sure that you have some unreviewed "chic flicks" piled somewhere over there... since they're mysteriously absent from your reviews. [IMG] SURELY, those would be better review material than suffering through Madonna's "acting".

Congratulations, Ron! You just sat through a truly terrible movie for the purpose of a review. You are officially a professional reviewer.[IMG]

    Ron,

Don't give yourself short shrift as a reviewer.

Above all else you offer something that many "professional" reviewers lack...

the ability / desire to give your audience the truth.

Ever notice how many raves in ads come from reviewers allied with publications or radio-tv stations you've never heard of?

"Amazing... the best film of the year"... Sheralyn Pomwrastle.

Truth in reviews is a precious thing.

    How do you spell "junket?"

Especially when its getting chilly in Montana.

What did you expect? It's a Madonna film. [IMG]
On a more serious note, I remember when this came out on video for the first time and everyone was going crazy about it. I rented it and thought it was worse than the Skinamax after 10:00 movies.

This movie could win a bad movie oscar. Madonna's acting is probably the worst of all time here. I love it!

No matter how bad this movie may be...I still think that it made at least five dollars more than Swept Away....:b

Of course pre-fame Madonna was nude in "A Certain Sacrifice" which is what it took to watch it. Can't wait for the SE DVD of that. [IMG]
At least Body isn't Shanhai Suprise...that didn't even have nudity to save it.

    I bought this DVD:
    a) Tower had it for 9.99
    b) It used Portland, Oregon as the location
(Yes, we are a proud people...aside from talents like
Gus VanSant and Todd Haynes, this town has been blessed
Body of Evidence and Dr Giggles.
(Madonna's walk from the jail building with
the news crews hounding her was a mere 5 blocks
    from my apartment.)
    c) It really is so bad that it is good.
This film wants to be Basic Instinct so badly,
    and fails on every level.
    d) The slap in the "Wish Me Luck" scene is yummy.
