    THE MUMMY RETURNS

    Where do I begin?
There is so much to talk about regarding
    Universal's most anticipated DVD release
    this year, THE MUMMY RETURNS.
What started out as the first blockbuster of
the Summer 2001 season, will ultimately turn
out to be the first blockbuster DVD of the
4th quarter, leading other potential hit titles
in a release season that doesn't quit.
THE MUMMY RETURNS is an extraordinary
DVD, though I must warn that my review copy
had a major glitch that froze up my Pioneer 525
and Sony 7000 DVD players in the exact same spots
during the beginning moments of Chapter 13. I had
to actually stop the disc and go ahead two
chapters in order to continue watching the program.
I am anticipating that this is a glitch confined
to just my copy, but I am bringing this to light
just in case any other similar reports surface.
    ....but let's move on.....
I will not spend too much time talking about
the movie itself. I will let my review of the
theatrical release that I published on my

Thanks Ron. I really enjoyed the first one and was really looking forward to this movie when I saw the first preview. However I had some things come up right around the time that it came out in the theaters so I never got a chance to see it. So I am very anxious to purchase this dvd and watch it at home. It's probably better that I see it in my home theater for the first time anyway. As you said, you enjoyed it better at home and so will I. I enjoy all movies I see at home more than I do at the theater anyways. Can't wait!

In the Universal press release, they mention that the disc will include a commentary with the director, just like the first film, but no one has mentioned it, is it on the disc, or not.

Appreciate the review Ron. When I saw this movie in the theater, I made up my mind right then and there that there would be no way I would purchase this dvd later. I hope you all enjoy it. "To each his own" as they say [IMG]

Although I would have liked a DTS track, I didnt think the first one really needed one, and it doesnt sound like this one needs it either. I can live without a DTS track and a pan and scan version of this movie, so I will not wait for Universal to undoubtedly release an Ultimate Edition, and I'll just pick up this version of the disc.

I believe it also includes a commentary by the director and the editor, am I correct? Did you listen to it? I remember that I really enjoyed the one they recorded for The Mummy (1999), and I hope this one is as good.

Death by CGI [IMG] That's what this movie is. And I can't wait to get this disc. When I saw this in the theater my seat was not the greatest, as I was sitting right next to the stairs, so I am looking forward to watching this in my own home.

quote: Some will argue whether THE MUMMY RETURNS is a better movie than its predecessor.[/quote]
And some will argue that the original is much better. [IMG]
I didn't enjoy this film at all in the theater, but this may be because of where I was sitting and the fact that I had too many annoying snot-nosed teenagers pissing me off during the film. I will give this a rent to see if I enjoy it a bit more at home. Sometimes movies work better at home than they do in the theater, as Ronbo said above.
Thanks for the excellent review Ron, I am going to give this brainless film another chance. I will say this, I really did enjoy the 1st hour of the film. The double decker bus sequence was just plain ol' fun! [IMG]

    Another 5 star review Ron.
I guess I'll buy this, even thought I waited 18 months for the super deluxe 2 disc set.

I wonder...Did they clean up the Scorpion King or is he blatantly CG.??

Does anyone know if Universal is going to release an "Ultimate Edition" of this movie a few months down the road?

No question about it, Mike. "THE MUMMY RETURNS": Ultimate Edition will be releases, along with a limited free movie pass to the theatrical release of "THE MUMMY FOREVER"

Oddly enough, now that I read Ron's review, I'm most interested in seeing the interactive Chamber of Doom feature. I went to this attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood last May and had a heckuva good time.
It was a very low tech effort by modern theme park standards but it was a total hoot and a reminder that a good old fashioned spook house -- done very, very well -- still is great entertainment. Nice to see that this temporary attraction will be immortalized via this DVD.

I think I will wait for the Ultimate Edition... I got burned once by Universal... not again!
