Good review Matt. I really enjoyed this film. Finding the Japanese audio took a little detective work, but it turned out fine. I can't wait to watch the English dub now. Tina Fey, and Matt Damon?....Crazy cool.

It's just unfortunate about the lossy Original Japanese Audio mix. I'll probably pick up both the Original Import Blu-Ray and the Domestic Release (using the Domestic to lend out to friends, etc.), and show support of Miyazaki's film to get the rest of them released here in the U.S. on Blu-Ray.

Rented from BBV and it appears that the rental blu is different from the retail blu.
the Japanese track is not on the disc unless it's hidden.
I only rented it again so I could check out the Japanese track and the proper subs, oh well.

I originally rented this disc. I haven't purchased it yet because Disney discs are overpriced at 33 to 36 Canadian dollars a set. The disc I rented had the subs, but maybe the rental discs in the States are different. Did you select the Japanese audio track before playing the film? When I selected the Japanese track, the subtitle menu showed regular subs were available, rather than the SDH subs.

It's impossible to switch audio when the film starts. Have you tried choosing the audio at the main menu? This is the only way I could access the Japanese audio.

^ yep that's what I did.
you have to stop or go to the main menu to switch audio.
As for special features, is this a 2 disc set 'cause the rental only has the Ghibli, Meet Ponyo and the storyboards.

I guess the rental only has those extras.

I picked this up for our son last night while I was at the theater watching "Date Night" for him and the sitter to watch. Watched it today.. Very dissappointed in the audio and extras. I posted my thoughts (review) but I recognize those who think differently.

The compression/loss of the original japanese track is bad. But the fact that the subs are wrong in places, the credits have no proper subs, the song lyrics are not subbed, and the Japenese mix is wrong really hurts this product. The Extras are also some of the most annoying to access of any Blueray I have tried.

If you can get this for $10 for a kid, it's a good find.

The US dub, is, BTW, aso "blah" the little kid performers in it kept reminding me of bad japanese movie dubs.

It's hard to view this as an "entire redo" because it isn't. This is still his wrok, and while I have no problem with a US soundtrack, the disc, at this compression rate, had plenty of room for two HD soundtracks.
