my friend is planning on buying a computer and a HTiB so he doesn't have a lot of money for hometheater.
i figure he could get the Kenwood 504, since there are so many good reviews, can it get dolby digital from a computer by bypassing the sound card? or will he need to get a fancy digital sound card?
any advice along these lines would be appreciated

Unless his soundcard already has a digital output for outputting surround sound then yes he would need a new soundcard. I've heard of a couple soundcards in the $49 range that have one so you might want to look into that. The only ones that I know of for sure that have it are the SB Live 5.1 cards and the Hercules Game Theater XP unit (which is a rather decent setup, card and a breakout box with plenty of inputs/outputs). This would probably be a question better asked in the HTPC forum.
