How to stop digital music from skipping on PC

Very often, when playing music through my PC, I get skips. Not much different from listening to old records on a record player. It doesn't matter if it is an mp3., wma., or wav. file. They all skip. They skip in Windows Media Player, in Real and in Rhapsody. Can I fix this?

Are there any settings deep within my PC's menus that I can change? Would a better sound card fix the problem?

I'm running Windows XP Home with full updates and Windows Meda Player 10. I have plenty of hard disk space and more then enough ram available.

Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Dave

You could have some kind of hardware problem causing that, or something driving your PC so hard it can't process the sound which forces a pause. Of course, you'd notice the latter if the PC was extremly unresponsive.

Corrupted files are also a very real possibility. Hard drives don't always go bad by stopping entirely, they can quite frequently start corrupting files left and right for a long time before they finally die.
