How to setup RS232 control (1 Viewer)

I am looking at automating my theater and was looking for info on what software I need in order to do RS232 control as well as IR? I have all of the RS232 commands for my devices that have RS232 now I just need advice on what software to use to control my devices. Thanks.

Well, if you want to be fancy, take a look at AMX.

How many RS-232 devices are you looking at, anyway?

To be honest, AMX is probably wildly expensive for what most home users want to do.. but it will do contact-closures, RS-232/422/485, and IR transmission.

If you just want to do a few limited things, I've been thinking about building a PC out of spare parts... run a BASIC program that just sits there, reading the keyboard... (GET KEY$ anyone?) and spits out a number of serial commands... add a multi-port serial card if need be.

Since I've just the one device right now (projector,) I've been thinking about some basic stuff:

1. power on/off
2. 16:9/4:3/small 4:3
3. Input select

And I've even got the tiny little Toshiba Libretto to do it with...
