I have a few inventoin ideas that I would like to do some research on but don't know where to begin. I guess the first place is trying to determine if the idea has already been invented, etc. Any ideas?

Do not discuss your inventions with other people that are not under an obligation to keep things private. Public disclosure, even to a handful of people, may waive your rights to international patents. Be careful how you proceed. At least get and scan through the Nolo press book 'patent it yourself' so you will know what some of the issues are.

Yes, you will need to conduct a "patent search." This does pretty much what you'd think.

BTW, if you see any companies that advertise on TV/Radio or in the back of magazines that offer to do this service for you (and then help you patent your invention), DON'T do that. If you're serious, go to a REAL patent lawyer.
