First time poster. Just curious on how to get the most out of our stuff and what I need to hook it all up properly.

We just purchased a Samsung 42" PN42A400

We also have an older phillips dvd/vcr combo (blu-ray is for next christmas)
Sony 5.1 surround sound
Xbox (not 360)
And the directv r22-100 SD dvr receiver

im guessing I probably need to upgrade my directv reciever to the hd dvr box

whats the best way to go as far as wiring? hdmi?

dont really know what to ask I just would like some expert advice so I can get the best out of what I have.

Thanks

I have no idea what connections your Sony 5.1 system or your Philips DVD/VCR combo have, so there's no way to tell you how to hook them up.

List all of your equipment and the connections available.

Well, you're a bit limited in what you can do. I'd do it this way:

Phillips DVD - Component Cable - TV
Philips DVD - Coaxial Audio - Sound system
Directv - HDMI - TV
Directv - Optical Audio - Sound system.

That leaves the XBox. I don't know what type of connectivity the Xbox has (it was needed), but the only option left in your sound system is to hook it up via RCA cables (red/white) and then you'll have to connect it to your TV via either HDMI or Component. If the XBox doesn't have either of those, then according to the picture of your TV, you have no way to connect it to the display.

Thanks for your help Kevin. Xbox is least of my worries.

Now I just need to come up with a way to manage all the wires. I still have yet to run my internet connection into the Directv receiver to receive the OnDemand programs.
