You guys helped me tremendously with my neighbor nightmare so I'm going back to the well again.

Here's the brief story. When my father died in March of 2001, this friend of 20 years was a total no-show. No condolence call to my mother or me, no phone call, not even a lousy card.

I hung out with him twice last fall for Monday night football at a local bar, but didn't have a good time. I am not, and never have been mad at him for this, exactly...I just don't want or need a friend like this in my life.

When I bought my home, I figured he'd be gone, but somehow he got my new phone number and called. After not returning calls, he got my home address and started dropping by. After the second unexpected visit two weeks ago, I flat out told him that our friendship was done and that he wasn't welcome in my home. How much more direct can I be? And yet, just today he dropped by again.

What can I say to get rid of this guy?

    Be blunt.

Tell him how you feel and that you would rather end the relationship.

At the end of the day, honesty is always the best approach. I'm not saying to be mean, but be honest.

Don't answer the door bell when he comes by....sooner or later he will get the message. If he comes up to you when you are around the yard, ignore him or go back into the house and close door.

    Carl,

One thing to keep in mind. People don't always know what, if anything to do with something like a death in the family. If that is really the only problem you are having, talk about it. Give it a couple tries. If it is obvious he doesn't give a shit or just seems to give you lip service, then so be it. You don't need that in your life. I have actually done this a couple times. Maybe I was more blunt, put the people stayed away.

    Real simple

Get call answer and pick up messages ... delete his

If you are working in the yard, make sure you know the time so when he drops by you work until the next 30 minute intreval then you clean up and go.

EG; 4:40 P.m. You just started cutting the front yard, of course you were cutting both the front and back, make an excuse like "Hey John, caught me at a bad time I was just hoping to get this cut before I head out to dinner, sorry"

Cut the lawn, put the lawnmower away, and go inside. If he's still around 15-20 minutes later GO OUT.

Worse comes to worse tell him AGAIN that you like him NOT to stop by or call anymore.

Lend him a large amount of money. If he's anything like some of my friends, you'll never hear from him again. [IMG]

Well, a friend of mine managed to get rid of an (other) old friend. He married the guys girlfriend. Maybe that's not the ideal aproach, though. [IMG]

Don't make excuses, you'll be hearing from him all the time. People don't "get hints." Just tell him.
