I currently have JBL S310 speakers with a JBL S-center speaker. These are run by a Yamaha htr 5240. I've never really got them sounding great. It seems like the center channel is always too loud or not loud enough. It varies on the programming i'm watching. Is there someway I can set these up better. Is there a reference dvd I can use?

First thing to do is purchase an SPL meter from Radio Shack and use it to calibrate your speakers. Using the internal test tones, all speaker should register 75db on the meter.

Get (rent or purchase) Avia II or Digital Video Essentials for further fine tuning (and learning).

Follow David's advice and there is almost always a bit of volume difference between sources, some will play louder than others, no way of getting away from it unless you get a new receiver with Dynamic EQ abilities, volume start up settings etc.

Additionally, try "aiming" the speaker towards the listening positions...so if the speaker is below the display use something to prop the front end upward so that the speaker fires at the listeners...following the same logic if the speaker is above the display aim it downward...this may help improve the speaker's focus.
