Is this a secondary drive or the primary?

Are you formatting your primary partition or primary harddrive (C[IMG], planning to re-install or upgrade your operating system?

Or are you formatting a secondary partition / hard-drive (D[IMG]?

If the former, I believe you need to make a boot disk (a floppy), boot into DOS and use the format command. I've done this several times to prepare for a reinstall.

If the latter, I'd expect there'd be a Windows command to re-format the HD. Or, you can bring up the command line, and use the DOS format command there.

Try right-clicking on the drive in Windows Explorer. There should be a "Format..." option.

It's the only HD in the PC, The brother inlaw will give it to my son if he can clear the HD first. He tried to just reinstall the reinstall disc fro Gateway but that left stuff still on the HD. So I told him he needs to format it first.
It will not do it by the "right click" Format cus it saids Windows is in use.

Go to www.bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk for Win98. Boot to this disk. Use the fdisk command at the prompt.

You may want to Google fdisk to learn a little about it beforehand.

if he's got his original Gateway CDs he's got a bootable CD with a utility program that will totally wipe his drive than overwrite it with zeros to completely remove all data, leaving it ready to be partitioned, formated and a clean Windows installation placed back on it. I used to go through this process with users all the time when I did tech support for Gateway. He should be able to go to their website or call tech support for the procedure. (They can probably e-mail him the step-by-step instructions or refer him to a web page for the exact version of the System Restore discs that he has.)

I'd try to give him the procedure myself but its been a few years since I did it last and I don't trust my memory. [IMG]

He said he tried the reinstall disc but it left part of the XP he had installed and parts of the newly installed 98 would not work.[IMG] Now mind me I have not yet seen the computer or tried it myself.

I will have to go over there and try it myself!

A format or repartition won't necessarily clear the disk. For that, you can try Darik's Boot and Nuke . There are also links at the bottom of that page to other disk wipers.

With only a 10gig HD we can over write every thing real quick. I am thinking it might have some inappropriate pics on it the Uncle does to want others to see.

Geez, with a 10 GB HDD why don't you just spend 65 or 70 bucks and buy a 60 or 80 GB disk and let the brother-in-law throw the 10 GB out in the trash? (He can run a nice, big bar magnet over it first, and then back his car over it if he wants to be sure his old data is gone. [IMG]) Then you can install Windows from his original CDs and have still have a better system for next to nothing.

    Regards,

    Joe

I don't feel a 450mhz pc with no extras is worth spending $70. to replace the HD when it has a perfectly good but small HD in it already!

DaveF, your link in the middle doesn't work. It only a http:// in the link (the above quote won't have it, as I only copied the text from your post). I was wanting to look at that page about Installing Windows 98.

Oops, sorry. I've fixed it. I suggest starting with the third link, which is to the table of contents for a series on building on Win98 computer, and reading the whole series.
