If your receiver does not have HDMI connections, you can always use an optical cable from the DVD player to the TV to get the surround sound. In this case you simply connect the HDMI cable directly to the TV.

Verify that the TV accepts and autoselects the "resolution" of the DVD player via HDMI, it is possible that some DVD players output HDMI only as 480p and some TV sets accept HDMI only as 1080i, that will not match.
