Are you talking about the DirecTivo? S-video is your best connection for video. You can run it through your A/V receiver if you don't have enough inputs on your TV or just want the convenience of video switching between components. If your A/V receiver support optical, use it. You will get Dolby Digital if you have it selected as a menu option and it is available on the channel you are recording.

With a 55511, you have more than enough inputs. S-video is the best way to connect the two pieces. Also, since your TV is new, have you had time to calibrate it? Maybe at least turn down the contrast from "torch mode"?

Kevin, I ran the S-video out of my HDVR2 (directivo) directly to the TV and a set of RCA cables directly to the TV to make life as simple as possible for the non-technical wife. She wants to turn on the Tv and watch and hear whatever with out fooling with other componets.

For myself I use the same S-video but I also ran an optical digital link to the AV receiver. Pretty much I only use the digital link when something comes on that uses DD.

I also ran composite RCA cable & audio to the VCR in case I ever want to save something off of the HDVR2 to tape. I've done that once in 5 months.
