Just wondering what is the ideal distance between my front left and right speakers. The speakers will be placed on either side of a 36" television. There will be a center speaker on top of the tv. How far apart (or how far from each side of the television) should the front speakers be?

Check out this informative link from Dolby. This is in PDF format.
Basically, about 45 to 60 degrees apart from your listening position. The Center and mains should all be equidistant from the listening position.

The old rule of thumb was that the distance between speakers is the same as your distance from them (which comes out to 45 degrees). That was for stereo. With a center channel, you can probably spread them a little more.
