i've double dipped due to full screen dvds i've received either as presents, or cause my wife bought them for me before i explained i don't want them. everyone i know now knows widescreen only. only a few of mine from vhs to dvd
shawshank redemption
scream
jurassic park

that was pretty much my vhs collection. now i have over 300 dvds. me and the wife have slowly been replacing her disney vhs collection. i also double dipped SPR from dolby to dts. i'll double dip on the following when or if they come out.

goodfellas non flipper
star wars OT on dvd
big lebowski better transfer
matrix better transfer
mallrats better transfer
and any that i have that aren't anamorphic.

Between VHS, LD and DVD how many times have you dipped for your fav titles?
Not very much.

VHS never got me very excited about HT like DVD did, so I only had a few VHS titles.

I was tempted to try LD when it came out, but the movies where always too expensive for my budget.

There are a few DVD's (maybe 3 or 4?) that I've purchased again when better quality/anamorphic transfers became available. Not many considering I have about 300 DVD titles now.

From VHS to DVD:
Big Trouble In Little China
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Sixteen Candles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

And.. DVD rebuys
Stargate CE for Stargate UE
and Monsters Inc... because of a nasty scratch in my original copy.

I didn't buy movies on VHS, except for a few Disney titles, so I'm not going to count these as double-dipping. I have never owned a laserdisc.

On DVD, I have bought the same title twice only in an expanded or restored edition. Hence:

Singin' in the Rain (original and SE)
West Side Story (original and SE)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (original P&S and new SE)
Little Shop of Horrors (original and replacement -- boy was I glad I kept the original!)
Fellowship of the Ring (original and EE)
Two Towers (original and EE)
E.T. (SE and gift set)
JFK (original part of Oliver Stone set, and newest SE)
Casablanca (original and SE)
Lawrence of Arabia (SE and Superbit, because I wanted to support Robert Harris's work)
From Here To Eternity (original and Superbit)
How Green Was My Valley (original and restored Fox version)
Memento (original and SE)
Sixth Sense (original and Vista SE)
Beauty and the Beast (original Criterion and restored Criterion)
Phantom of the Opera (Image and Kino)
The General (Image and Kino)
Modern Times/Gold Rush/Great Dictator (Image and Warners SEs)

Finally, Cabaret, original and newest version, which is precisely the same but with different cover art suggesting it was anamorphic. It isn't. I gave it away.

I triple dipped on T2. First came the laser edition, then the first dvd release and now the D-VHS release. I am surprised not to have noticed anyone else mention D-VHS. Still a niche format, I suppose!

OOPS! :b

I totally forgot about my D-Theater collection, which has resulted in additional "double dipping" to those referred to above:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Cape Fear

X-Men

U-571

Glengarry Glen Ross

Star Wars OT VHS, Definitave LD
Robin Hood: Price of Theives DVD(Flipper), SE
Lawrence of Arabia SVS SE, SUPERBIT

Top Gun SE when it comes out, if ever. That might not be a double dip because I have to replace my VHS copy that is a POW of a previous girlfriend.

I've double dipped on tons of DVDs as things get upgraded. So I'll limit myself to triple dips:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: VHS (first one I ever bought), 2 versions of DVD
Natural Born Killers: VHS, Director's Cut DVD, Oliver Stone boxset version (still have all 3)
2001: VHS, MGM DVD, remastered DVD
And the champeen:
Wizard of Oz: VHS, 50th anniversary VHS, MGM DVD, Warner DVD
Plus I think I taped it off the air a couple times to boot.

As embarassing as this looks the answer is easily Star Wars in it's various releases:

1) At least 1 VHS P/S before I got my 1st LD
2) SW SE DVD -- OK it's not exactly uncommon and I was weak

LD:
3) CAV P/S
4,5) CLV P/S (US and Japanese pressings of the US disc)
6,7) CLV WS - at least 2 different pressings, possibly 3 (Japanese Pioneer, US Pioneer, and Technidisc plants all released variations.
8,9,10) Def Edition -- 1st and 2nd pressings and I think I have a 3rd pressing from reading the history with some minor changes/repairs on the CC)
11,12) THX "Faces" US and Japanese pressings
13) SE US Box
14) SE Japanese Box 2nd Edition with Epis 2 trailer
15) SE Japanese Individual Release (I think, I know I have ESB and I think I have Epis. 4)
16) Original SW Japanese CAV WS
17) The 1st CLV 1982 P/S release

That's just wrong and I think I'm still missing some variations of the NTSC LD's like the 1st Japanese SE Boxset.

These are the titles I've double-dipped on over the years:

- Star Wars Trilogy (1995 P & S THX VHS box set, P & S [preordered by mistake; I had just learned about the benefits of widescreen at the time] Special Edition VHS box set)

- Jurassic Park (P & S VHS, Widescreen VHS)

- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers (2-Disc editions and 5 Disc Gift Sets for both films)

- Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (Widescreen VHS Gift Set, DVD)

- Tomorrow Never Dies (bare-bones DVD, "silver" cover Special Edition DVD)

- Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (1995 VHS, Platinum Edition DVD)

- Sleeping Beauty (P & S VHS, Special Edition DVD)

- Toy Story (P & S VHS, Ultimate Toy Box DVD Set)

- The Lion King (P & S VHS, Platinum Edition DVD)

- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (bare-bones DVD, Director's Edition DVD)

- Mary Poppins (P & S VHS, bare-bones DVD)

I expect to also double-dip with the X-Men Collection (I already have X-Men, but I want both X2 and the X-Men 1.5 discs included with this set) and the SE of A Bug's Life. And, of course, I'll definitely get both the 2-disc and the multi-disc Gift Set of The Return of the King next year. :)

I've double dipped in the sense of going from VHS to DVD 95 times. This means my VHS collection has gone from 100 titles to 5. The 5 left are Schindler's List, Star Wars Trilogy, and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don't Come Back!)

On DVD, I've double dipped the following:

Almost Famous
Casablanca
Clear and Present Danger
Fast and the Furious
Friends (Best-of to Season sets)
Hunt for Red October
Lawrence of Arabia
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Memento
Patriot Games
Right Stuff
Terminator 2
There's Something About Mary
Traffic

Triple Dip:
JFK

Soon to be Triple Dip:
Schindler's List (P&S VHS, WS VHS, 3rd will be the DVD.)
