I will be getting a new Dell PENTIUM 4 @1.6 GHZ ,

256 DDR SDRAM & a 40 GB ultra ATA/100 hard drive w/windows XP. How many MP3's can I save to my hard drive?

I would say that averaging 4mb for each 128k encoded MP3 would give you 7500 on a 30GB area of space.
but you should look into using higher bitrate with a Variable or average encoded bitrate for better sound quality.
hoosiers rule! my sister went to IU. Breaking away is a good movie as well. :)Link Removed

Hi Eric, we pretty much figured the answer last month in this thread: MP3s & Your Hard Drive
LAME/VBR is the best -although some Portable/car players will give your trouble if you burn those 'VBR' MP3s to a CD-R and try to use that to play 'em...on a hard drive like you mentioned, that shouldn't be a factor.
Good Luck,
~Rob
